Richarno Colin of Mauritius opened up with a comfortable victory on day three of the 2024 Boxing 2nd World Qualification Tournament in Bangkok on Sunday (26 May).

The afternoon session consisted solely of preliminary round bouts in the men’s 63.5kg class, and three-time Olympian Colin kept alive his hopes of making a fourth Games appearance at Paris 2024 with a unanimous points decision over Guyana’s Joel Williamson.

Emilio Garcia of the United States also made it through, beating Finland’s Ismail Umar 4-1 on points. Aruba’s Fabian Williams needed a 3-2 split decision to prevail against Filip Poturovic of Croatia.

Romania’s Robert Jitaru made an eye-catching start to his campaign in the Thai capital. After losing the opening round on four of the five scorecards to Pan Jinxiang of People’s Republic of China, the 26-year-old unloaded at the end of round two with the referee calling it off just before the bell.

Japan’s Nishiyama Shion was another man to finish his bout inside the distance. He was well on top after the opening round, and went on to stop Anai Powell of the Bahamas late in round two.

Namibia’s Rio 2016 Olympian Jonas Jonas will not be returning to the Games this time after he was defeated 4-1 on points by Ali Habibibezhad of Islamic Republic of Iran. Patris Mughalzai of Great Britain also made an early exit, going down by unanimous decision to Colombia’s Jose Manuel Viafara Fory.

Aleksej Sendrik made a surprise exit having been one win shy of obtaining a Paris quota place* in March’s 1st World Qualification Tournament in Busto Arsizio, Italy. The Serbian went out on a 3-2 split decision to Askat Kultaev of Kyrgyzstan.

Cuba’s world silver medallist Erislandy Alvarez, Clesisson dos Santos of Brazil, and Ukraine’s Yaroslav Khartsyz were among the men progressing by way of unanimous decisions.

India’s Abhinash Jamwal won every round as he eased past Lithuania’s Andriejus Lavrenovas. World 71kg bronze medallist Nishant Dev completed a good day for Indian boxers at 71kg, getting past Guinea-Bissau’s Armando Bighafa. Dev was one victory away from securing a Paris quota berth in Italy.

The next round for the weight class will be in the afternoon session on Tuesday (28 May), with the Paris 2024 quota spots being awarded later in the week, live on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the official Olympics app.
