2024 JUCO World Series Day 3 turns into a firework show

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – Day three of the JUCO World Series saw two teams remain undefeated and one more team is heading home.

Game eight of the tournament featured Southern Nevada Coyotes squaring off with the Florence-Darlington Tech Stingers. The Coyotes jumped out to a 3-1 lead after Tyman Long hit his second homerun of the tournament. They added two more runs in the 5th before taking a commanding 8-2 lead heading into the bottom half of the 6th. The Stingers bats caught fire in the bottom half of the 6th as they cut the lead in half after posting 3 runs of their own. In the 8th Tech took their first lead since the second inning thanks to a 4 run inning that ultimately propelled them to their second victory of the tournament. The Stingers will play Blinn College tomorrow night at 7 PM. Southern Nevada will battle with Crowder College tomorrow at 10 AM in the first elimination game of the day.

Game two of the day but game 9 of the tournament was the only elimination game of the day that saw Northwest Florida State battling Shelton State. The Buccaneers got off a blistering start with back to back homeruns from the 2 and 3 hitters in the lineup. Shelton added one more run in the 3rd to lead 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning. With the bases loaded and two outs the Raiders needed a big swing and they got just that from Shortstop Colby Jones as he launched a grand slam over the left field wall to give his team their first lead of the game. Brock Tapper added two runs later in the inning with a RBI double to give the Raiders a 6-3 lead. After adding another run to start the 4th, Jones was hungry for more and he mashed his second homerun of the game to put Northwest Florida up 10-3. They added three more runs in the 5th and 6th to cap off the 13-4 run rule victory. Northwest Florida will play the #1 seed Johnson County tomorrow at 2 PM in an elimination game. Congratulations to Shelton State on a incredible season.

The final game of the day saw the #1 seed Johnson County battling with the #4 seed Georgia Highlands. Through four innings this game was without a doubt a pitchers duel as both teams combined for just 6 hits. In the fifth the Chargers bats woke up with two big time homeruns to give them a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning the Cavaliers scored their only run on the game via an RBI triple. The 6th inning proved to be the difference tonight as Georgia Highlands scored a run off an error, then two more on a double to right, then they put up two more runs on a ball that did not leave the infield before the inning was capped off with an RBI single to center to give the Chargers a commanding 8-1 lead. They added two more runs in the 7th to close out a dominant 10-1 run rule victory. Georgia Highlands will enjoy an off day tomorrow before playing in the final game on Wednesday night at 7 PM. Johnson County now gears up for an elimination game Tuesday against Northwest Florida State at 2 PM.
