Memorial Day weekend travel results in 11 deaths, hundreds of injuries, GSP says

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – During Memorial Day weekend, 11 people died and almost 250 were injured in traffic crashes statewide, according to Georgia State Patrol (GSP).

By GSP’s measurements, the holiday travel period started on Friday, May 24, at 6 p.m. and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 27.

During the weekend, troopers investigated more than 500 crashes. The troopers and Georgia Department Of Public Safety officers made more than 24,000 traffic stops, arrested almost 500 people for driving under the influence, and issued nearly 15,000 warnings and more than 14,000 citations.

The fatal crashes were reported by police in Atlanta, Clayton County and Emerson, which is a city in Bartow County.

More than 1 million Georgians were expected to drive at least 50 miles on Memorial Day weekend, according to AAA. GSP noted that the crash statistics are preliminary and subject to change.

Last year, 16 people died during Memorial Day weekend, according to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
