Columbus’ Mark Cummings premieres film ‘When Three Become One’ on Saturday

Mark Cummings’ feature film from Awalkonwater Entertainment and First Family Entertainment, “When Three Become One,” is set to premiere June 1 at 4 p.m. at Phoenix Theatres Lennox Town Center 24, and the screening is already sold out.

The film follows a young man whose wife needs a life-saving bone-marrow transplant. The only available donor is the man she had an affair with. The protagonist must grapple with this harsh reality, come to terms with his wife’s lover saving her and find another donor or let her die.

Cummings is particular in his writing process, which allows him to create gripping narratives like that of “When Three Become One.”

“I come up with an idea and then I break it down into the three-act paradigm, and I do an outline for a period of time,” said Cummings. “That makes it easier for me to write and keep on track.”

Including “When Three Become One,” Cummings has produced six feature films and one short film with Awalkonwater Entertainment, but film production is not his career.

“Believe it or not, I’ve been doing this since 2009,” said Cummings. “But I’m what you call a weekend warrior; we shoot during the summer and on weekends.”

Cummings works a full-time job as the executive director of Brookdale Senior Living, giving him limited time to film features.

With just 17 full days of shooting, Cummings has delivered a nearly two-hour fiction narrative. Although “When Three Become One” is longer than Cummings’ usual features, he’s happy to say that its layered story has held viewers’ attention thus far.

“The cast and crew screening went very well,” said Cummings. “They were excited about it, but of course, they’re also biased. The real test comes on Saturday at the actual premiere.”

The excitement has made it past just the cast and crew, as “When Three Become One” is to be featured in the Charlotte Black Film Festival in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The festival runs from June 13-16, intending to empower Black artists and bring people together from all around the world.
