Netflix reveals 3 Body Problem will only have 3 seasons
Netflix has announced that the science fiction series 3 Body Problem, based on Liu Cixin’s acclaimed trilogy, will end after its third season. The news was first shared on Friday, May 31, at a FYSEE panel.
So far, only the first season of 3 Body Problem has aired on Netflix. The eight-episode season begins in 1960s China, following a young astrophysicist, Zine Tseng, whose pivotal decision shapes the future. The narrative then leaps forward to the 21st century, where a team of scientists and a detective work to prevent a catastrophic event that could alter time and space and destroy humanity.
“We included a lot of what we loved from the [novels by Liu Cixin] in Season 1, but the vast majority of reasons we wanted to make this show are in Season 2,” executive producer D.B. Weiss, known for his work on Game of Thrones, stated in a press release on Friday.
“We always wanted to get to the final page of the third book, and it’s really, really thrilling to us that we will get to do just that,” Weiss added.

In an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the creators discussed their ambitious plans to comprehensively adapt all three novels in Cixin’s trilogy. “We knew going into this how many hours we need to tell the rest of the story because we’ve got a roadmap through to the end,” Weiss explained. “And we have what we need to get to the end as intended from when we started.”
3 Body Problem is one of Netflix’s most-streamed series over the past year. It topped Netflix’s global Top 10 list for seven weeks.
