Sports Spotlight: Michael Fagerland
BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Michael Fagerland is a 1st-Team All-State football player from Shiloh Christian and he holds six school records but that’s not the sport he plans to play in college. Fagerland will be on the diamond for the Governors again this summer before he heads to the University of Mary.
Michael Fagerland is arguably one of North Dakota’s best baseball prospects. Being named the 2024 Class B Baseball Senior Athlete of the Year should be enough proof if you haven’t seen him play.
“It was very easy to coach Michael,” said Shiloh Christian Head Coach Aric Lee. “We could put him anywhere, and he’s comfortable and capable of playing any position on the field. So that makes our job a lot easier.”
“I like working counts, I like getting on base,” said Fagerland. “So, I’d say I’m a hard out to get. I’d say that’s one of my strengths. And then definitely on the mound. We have fun when I’m on the mound because we get to put runs up, and I try and keep scores down which is nice.”
No matter the position or sport, Fagerland has been soaring for the Skyhawks for quite some time.
“My seventh-grade year, I was playing with my brother Canaan, he was a senior, and he just really showed me the reins on everything throughout and how it was supposed to be played. That team had some really good leadership. And really since my eighth-grade, freshman year, I’ve tried to be a leader on this team. It’s been really nice with this program, just to be able to go from freshman to senior year being a leader and playing well,” said Fagerland.
“Michael has been around the baseball field since his brothers were playing. I think Dawson, his oldest brother, came in 2011 and started playing with us. So, he’s been around the field ever since. Then being on the same team with Canaan when he was a seventh-grader, actually playing on the varsity squad, being involved in the state tournament in 2019, so he’s been around our program for a long time,” said Lee.
Things are moving quickly for Fagerland, who is already back in action with the Bismarck Governors. In the fall, he’ll be able to say he’s a freshman on the UMary baseball team.
“Tanner Spencer is a great guy. He took me on a tour of the campus, keeps in contact with me every week. So, it’s been really good getting to know him and just, I’m really excited for the atmosphere and what he brings to the table,” said Fagerland.
All Fagerland did with the Skyhawks this spring was hit .437 and on the mound, he had 60 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched. Fagerland and The Govs begin their season Thursday with a match-up against the Mandan Braves.
