WDBJ7 Archive: The man known as “Mr. Fitness,” Artie Levin

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – As the summer season quickly approaches, now is the time to take advantage of the warm weather and get in some exercise.

WDBJ7 scoured through the archives to pay tribute to the man known as “Mr. Fitness,” who shared his passion for healthy living with audiences across our hometowns for over 25 years.

Arthur “Artie” Levin hosted the “Artie Levin Show” starting in 1961 and continuing through the 80s. In his role, Levin received thousands of letters from viewers asking for fitness advice and ways to get more active.

Levin proudly demonstrated workouts, showcased how to properly bend and stretch to get ready for the day, and shared tips on how to stay healthy during his daily weekday morning segment.

“He was dedicated, really dedicated to physical fitness and tried to spread it to everybody,” recounted the late former WDBJ7 General Manager John Harkrader in a 2002 interview.

After Levin’s departure from the station, he remained active throughout the rest of his life. He went on to found the Blue Ridge Bike Club and even won a Central Florida Triathlon for the 75+ age-group, which consisted of strenuous running, swimming, and biking.

Levin died in May of 1996, but not without leaving an incredible legacy behind.

Every year, in Levin’s honor, the Blue Ridge Bike Club hosts an annual “Artie Levin Memorial Ride” also known as “Big Artie,” which consists of a grueling 90 mile path around Roanoke.

In 1997, the General Assembly paid tribute to the late fitness guru by presenting a memorial resolution to his daughter by former Delegates Vic Thomas, Chip Woodrum, and former Senator John Edwards. That same year, Levin’s bicycle and other personal memorabilia was donated to the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

“I considered him a very good friend and I think this is one small way we could, the elected officials in our part of the state, could honor him,” said Thomas in a 1997 interview with WDBJ7.

Additionally, an annual “Artie Levin Personal Life Award” is given at the B’nai B’rith Athletic and Achievement Award banquet to a student-athlete who shows the highest level of service to the community.

Images of the beloved “Mr.Fitness” can be found along the halls of WDBJ7 and in the memories of many longtime viewers.
