Sports briefs: Pacifics pitcher tosses no-hitter against Vallejo

Owen Cuffe tossed a no-hitter to lead the San Rafael Pacifics to a 5-0 road win against the Vallejo Seaweed on Thursday night.

Cuffe, who made 17 relief appearances as a senior this past season for Saint Mary’s, threw 132 pitches in nine innings of work for the Pacifics (9-2 Pecos League), striking out 14 hitters against just two walks.

Cuffe, who lowered his earned-run average to 1.46, got all the run support he would need in the top of the first inning as the Pacifics scored four times. Mark Hernandez, John Bicos, and Braxton King had run-scoring singles in the inning.

San Rafael added another run in the second inning for the final margin. Cuffe led off the inning with a walk then scored on a double by Hernandez.

The Pacifics were scheduled to host Vallejo (4-7) on Friday night before hosting Martinez at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
