Warmer weather typically followed by high demand in construction jobs

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – With the summer arriving in the Black Hills, two things are likely to follow, warmer weather and a higher demand for construction jobs.

Midwestern Mechanical Service Manager Dustin Christensen says it’s common in the summer months to see a bigger demand for construction work due to warmer conditions.

He added another contributor to the demand could be due to construction companies establishing budgets and finishing blueprints for projects early in the year. This leads to a lot of building and road work during the summer.

Christensen believes with Rapid City growing, more industries are coming into town which leads to more building projects.

He also feels high school graduates interested in construction and finishing school in May might play a factor as well.

“That’s the nice thing with being in trades if you do do an apprenticeship, you’re getting paid the whole time while you’re doing an apprenticeship. You’re not sitting in a class all the time. And therefore, you know, when you’re done and you say you’re a journeyman, you don’t have that school debt, you know, to start out a career,” Christensen said.

He also believes the high demand for construction jobs for the summer won’t change anytime soon.
