Shopping, restaurants, and easier travel expected for northwest Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) -New planned developments in North Huntsville is expected to bring new homes, new shopping centers and easier travel.

An area seemingly starved of grocery stores, retail, and housing, northwest Huntsville is now prepped and primed for redevelopment.

Ground has already broken on a new Food City along Highway 231/431 near Bob Wade Lane, and according to District 1 Councilman Devyn Keith, it will be the anchor for more to come.

“This part right here will anchor what is the new Northwest Huntsville and again the things that we’re doing now are long overdue but the product of the hard work we’ve done over the last four years,” Keith said.

Keith said the site will soon see more restaurants and shopping for residents to enjoy closer to home. As for who will be moving in? The city will announce further information in the fall.

There is also movement on a northern bypass intended to reduce traffic on Memorial Parkway. He says this will provide ease of travel from Research Park to places like Hazel Green and North Huntsville.

“The capacity of the Parkway never accounted for the growth of Huntsville Alabama. This bypass will account for the growth of Huntsville fifty years from now,” Keith said.

New sewer lines will to be laid from Bob Wade to Pulaski Pike, making room for new housing subdivisions in the future.

“There is no place in Huntsville at all that somebody shouldn’t be comfortable calling home. But that also means we must pour in city support, private support, and people support to make sure that those places are done correctly to fit every user group and every demographic,” said Keith

Keith told WAFF 48 Food City is expected to reach completion by early 2025 with the bypass being completed at the very end of that year.

He also says in preparation for construction on that bypass, traffic on the parkway will soon be shifted onto access roads as early as this fall.
