A Pawesome journey: Midlands Family travels 400 miles to Lexington, Kentucky to adopt their dog

LEXINGTON, S.C. (WIS) – How far would you go for someone you love?

Mike and Michael Mills, a Midlands father and son, embarked on a road trip they didn’t see coming after they fell in love with a dog sheltered at the Lexington Humane Society.

They didn’t know the dog was in Lexington, Kentucky, over 400 miles from the Midlands.

“I felt like an idiot,” recalled Mike, with his son Michael shaking his head in disbelief. “But we were immediately attached to him. We knew we had to go see him.”

Without giving it much thought, Mike and Michael set off on the journey to meet the dog.

After seven hours of driving, they finally met Eminem.

“We saw him get out of the truck with the foster,” Mike recounted. “We just instantly knew. He walked right up to us, and we knew this wasn’t just a meet and greet.”

Eminem was the longest-standing resident in the Lexington Humane Society, according to Mike. As other smaller and younger dogs were sent to their forever homes, Eminem waited patiently for the right family.

Once Mike and Michael came along, they appreciated everything Eminem had to offer.

Well, almost everything.

“He drools a lot.” said the younger of the Mills, Michael. “So that sucks, but I knew I wanted a dog.”

According to Mike, Michael sleeps with Eminem every night. So, it’s safe to say that the drool won’t be a deal-breaker for Michael.

Now, they are advocating for others to consider adoption.

There is no distance too far that love can’t conquer, and sometimes the journey is more important than the destination.
