‘A+’ tips for back-to-school shopping

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Class is back in session.

For parents who still have no idea where to begin, Cherry Dale with the Virginia Credit Union has some tips to help them ace back-to-school shopping.

“Get that shopping list from the school and then go back from last year and sort through supplies that you already have,” she said.

She said to start with the places that are offering deals. Places like Walmart and Target have backpack basics usually right at the front entrance.

Dale also said to look online and price compare to see where you can get more bank for your buck.

“If you’re going to one specific store and you really want to go to that store, but you see a better price at another store, print that out and go in and show that store. They might price match what you’re bringing to them,” she said.

Be a straight “A” shopper by planning ahead. Dale said to buy in bulk now and be set for the future.

“If you plan for that now at the beginning of the school year, you’re going to be far better off and not be in a panic mode about how you’re going to afford those things moving forward throughout the year,” Dale said.

Dale also said to involve the kids in this process, just don’t let them get too carried away.

“They tend to just want to put everything in the cart as you’re going through, so putting boundaries around that and having certain goals in mind when you’re going into the store is really important,” Dale said.

Finally, she said to take the opportunity to teach them about budgeting, comparison buying and needs and wants. Lessons they may not get in the classroom.

“This is a good way to show your child that they don’t need to purchase everything brand new every year. They get what they actually need, not necessarily what they want,” Dale said.

Also consider shopping during the tax-free weekend Aug.2 to Aug. 4. School supplies and many clothing items are tax-free Friday through Sunday.
