AAA expecting record travel numbers for Thanksgiving

MASSACHUSETTS – Hopefully, you’ve had your brakes checked, because if you’re one of the 71 million people expected to travel by car this year, you may be using them a lot. If you’re flying, long lines and wait times are also a possibility, but in Worcester, the airport is ready for the rush.

For many, the road to Thanksgiving started Friday. Worcester Regional Airport will see a small percentage of the near 6 million people expected to fly this Thanksgiving.

Airport Director Andy Davis says the peak is typically the day before.

What You Need To Know

  • AAA projects a record 79.9 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Thanksgiving holiday travel period
  • The travel agency projects a record 71.7 million people will travel by car over Thanksgiving
  • The worst times to travel by car over Thanksgiving are Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon
  • The Worcester Regional Airport says they usually peak the day before the holiday, but leadership says they’re ready for the rush

“The people that can’t get out of work have the last-minute chance to travel,” Davis said. “So, Wednesday is going to be really busy. And Sunday and Monday is when everybody’s returning. But we have full flights right through the week.”

AAA says warm weather destinations are among the most popular this year, with four Florida cities being ranked among the top domestic destinations. JetBlue flies from Worcester to Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers.

Davis’s advice to travelers: stay in the loop.

“It’s important to stay updated with your airline,” Davis said. “Get their app on your phone. Make sure your mobile phone is in their system to get texts whenever you make a reservation. Because things happen, changes, itineraries change, and it’s important to have that information handy.”

A record 79.9 million Americans are predicted to travel 50 miles or more this year, most of which by car. AAA’s Director of Public Relations Jillian Young said travel is still soaring post-pandemic.

“Thanksgiving is one, in particular, where people are excited to see family and friends,” Young said. “So people get out there really no matter what.”

Young points to gas prices as a factor behind the boost in their projections, as the average price in Massachusetts is down 40 cents from this time last year. And with so many people behind the wheel, AAA is encouraging safe and sober driving.

“We do so much talking about planning your trip and making sure that goes smoothly,” Young said. “But if you’re someone who is going to be enjoying some drinks over the holiday, just make sure that you’ve got a plan to get home so that everyone can stay safe on the road.”

AAA says the worst times to travel by car over the Thanksgiving week are Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. They recommend early morning for anyone heading out for the holiday.
