PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – If you are planning on traveling for Memorial Day weekend, expect more traffic than usual.

AAA projects that over 36 million people will travel by car over the weekend, which will be the highest number recorded since the organization began keeping track in 2000. This is 4% more than last year’s number of drivers.

AAA also reports that this will be the busiest Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, with an increase of 4.8% over last year.

Almost 2 million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation during the weekend, like buses, cruises and trains.

Transportation data and insights provider INRIX says that travel times this weekend can also take 90% longer than usual, and the best time to leave for the weekend is on Thursday, May 23 either before 11 a.m. or after 7 p.m.
