AEW: Worlds End 2024 Preview
All Elite Wrestling has reached the end of the road when it comes to the year 2024, and what a tumultuous year it has been! From Sting’s final match at REVOLUTION 2024 to “Timeless” Toni Storm’s reign atop the AEW Women’s Division to Bryan Danielson’s AEW World Championship victory at ALL IN: LONDON 2024, the AEW faithful have witnessed quite a wild ride. Then factor in what happened to Danielson at ALL OUT 2024 against Jon Moxley, what happened to Toni Storm at ALL IN: LONDON 2024 at the hands of Mariah May, as well as what The Death Riders have done for the last four months, and it just becomes a total madhouse.
Of course there’s the emergence of The Hurt Syndicate of MVP, Shelton Benjamin, and Bobby Lashley, the dereliction of duty by The Elite, injuries, departures, new arrivals, the fate of RAMPAGE, and it’s reasonable to say that, all told, 2024 has cumulatively been the most unhinged year in All Elite Wrestling history. Tonight at WORLDS END 2024 in Orlando, it all culminates in the final event of the year airing live on pay-per-view starting at 8pm ET/7pm CT, with the ZERO HOUR kicking off on the official AEW YouTube channel, the place to get caught up on all the happenings of DYNAMITE, COLLISION, and RAMPAGE, as well as all AEW has to offer, ahead of tonight’s epic event!
AEW WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH…
Jon Moxley(c) vs. “Hangman” Adam Page vs. “Switchblade” Jay White vs. “Freshly Squeezed” Orange Cassidy
Jon Moxley shocked the wrestling world when he, Claudio Castagnoli, “The Bastard” PAC, and Marina Shafir first assaulted Bryan Danielson after his ALL OUT 2024 victory over then-TNT Champion Jack Perry. Then when they, along with Wheeler Yuta, repeated that feat after Bryan’s WRESTLEDREAM 2024 World Championship loss to Moxley it finally settled into AEW’s collective consciousness that nothing would be the same ever again.
This led to members of the AEW locker room standing up to the 4-Time World Champion and The Death Riders, and though some like Isiah Kassidy suffered for their temerity, at least someone was trying to defend All Elite Wrestling against this crusade of Moxley’s. Dark Order, Private Party, Daniel Garcia, Darby Allin, they all stepped up to the plate in one way or another, but it was Orange Cassidy accepting the mantle foisted upon him following The Death Riders’ assault on Chuck Taylor that really bolstered a resistance. The fact that OC stepped up to challenge Moxley at FULL GEAR 2024 served as a beacon of hope for the rest of AEW, even though he didn’t beat AEW’s self-proclaimed King, and Darby Allin’s willingness to drive a car at The Death Riders, well that’s just inspiration of a whole different sort.
Furthermore, after FULL GEAR 2024, it wasn’t just Orange Cassidy who stood in opposition to the World Champion and his ilk. The resistance against The Death Riders was joined by “Switchblade” Jay White and “Hangman” Adam Page, and though their reasons for doing so were far less altruistic than Cassidy’s, at least they were doing something about the violent incursion of The Death Riders and saw the need to get the AEW World Title away from Jon Moxley. It was more than The EVPs of AEW did before they turned tail and ran away from the fight, and even their cowardly response is more than some members of the AEW locker room who’ve chosen to just ignore the whole situation and stay focused on their own worries.
The thing is, Jon Moxley isn’t necessarily wrong when he talks about how the egos of the AEW locker room are destroying what he feels All Elite Wrestling is supposed to be. Those egos have made it nearly impossible for his three opponents to get on the same page and work toward eliminating Moxley so they can they vie for the title among themselves. They did show some continuity this past Wednesday night during DYNAMITE ON 34TH STREET, as shown in the video atop the section, but that simply meant they didn’t resort to fighting each other as they did at DYNAMITE: WINTER IS COMING 2024 or it turning into a shoving match before fighting The Death Riders as it did at DYNAMITE: HOLIDAY BASH 2024. There’s at least progress there, and if these three warriors can keep that up at WORLDS END 2024 than the jungle they’re walking into may be a scarier place for the champion than his challengers.
Together Adam Page, Orange Cassidy, and Jay White can eliminate Jon Moxley from this equation; it may not be an Elimination Match, but they can do whatever is necessary to make sure that this so-called King doesn’t leave 2024 as the AEW World Champion. They can give back to Mox every hurt he and The Death Riders have inflicted on the AEW roster over the last several months, and rip the title away from his death grip. All they have to do is cooperate long enough to make that happen, which in some twisted fashion may just be Jon Moxley’s goal. Three of AEW’s best putting aside their egos to focus on one mutual goal of eliminating Moxley and then fighting until the best man wins, thereby forcing all three challengers to up their game in order to become the new champion? That sounds quite like the world in which Jon Moxley and The Death Riders claim to want to exists, but will that be what they actually want if they wake up on December 29th and Jon Moxley is no longer the reigning and defending AEW World Champion?
And if OC, Hangman, and “Switchblade” fail to come together tonight at WORLDS END 2024, will the hellscape that was the death of RAMPAGE be what the future holds for the whole of All Elite Wrestling?
AEW WOMEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TIJUANA STREET FIGHT…
“The Woman From Hell” Mariah May(c) vs. “La Mera Mera” Thunder Rosa
While she chose to bill herself as “The Glamour” following that 2024 Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament victory and subsequent betrayal of “Timeless” Toni Storm, “The Woman from Hell” moniker Mariah May has adopted as of late seems much more fitting. Not only did she betray her supposed mentor en route to winning the AEW Women’s World Championship at ALL IN: LONDON 2024, she also tried to bash her “best friend” Mina Shirakawa with a champagne bottle, leading to their title clash at DYNAMITE: WINTER IS COMING 2024 and effectively destroying that relationship.
In addition to those two monumental moments, Mariah has turned away four other challengers over five matches, including a No Disqualification fight with Anna Jay on the November 16th COLLISION, which has led Mariah to verbally denigrate the AEW Women’s Division prior to said fight with Mina:
Suffice to say Mina backed up those words in the fight with Mina while Thunder watched on from ringside, and though the immediate aftermath of the bout turned a lot of attention towards the return…debut…arrival of Toni Storm, it was still “La Mera Mera” poised as the next challenger to the championship. It’s a position that Thunder Rosa has certainly earned, after all her last title fight at DYNASTY 2024 against “Timeless” Toni Storm was somewhat marred by Mariah’s attempts to interfere as well as the defending champion resorting to a low blow to get the win. There’s also the fact that Rosa holds a victory over Mariah May from the 4/4/24 edition of DYNAMITE, one of just four singles losses Mariah has sustained since her in-ring debut for AEW on the January 3, 2024 DYNAMITE.
She already redeemed the loss at Anna Jay’s hands twice-over, the second in that No DQ fight, but can she do the same in this Tijuana Street Fight? “The Woman From Hell” has chosen to push all the buttons in regards to Thunder’s family and heritage, and even thrown some choice words in her father’s direction, but is it the wisest decision to rile up “La Mera Mera”? Over the years the AEW faithful have seen what she’s capable of in these situations; be it the Unsanctioned Lights Out Match, the Steel Cage World Title Match, the Texas Bull Rope match, or the Dia De Los Muertos fight, Thunder Rosa has shown a deep propensity for violence unlike anything we’ve seen Mariah May endure in her AEW matches.
Sure “The Glamour” has no problem drawing blood from her enemy when they’re unprepared and their back is turned, but what will she do when the opponent is in her face and bringing the fight? Will WORLDS END 2024 bring the end of Mariah May’s World Championship reign, or will her reign continue in the blood of Thunder Rosa?
2024 CONTINENTAL CLASSIC SEMIFINALS…
This past Wednesday night heading into DYNAMITE ON 34TH STREET, the Gold League of 2024’s Continental Classic was quite up for grabs as both Ricochet and Claudio Castagnoli entered the Hammerstein Ballroom with 9 points while Darby Allin and Will Ospreay came in with 6. A victory for Claudio over Komander, combined with a Ricochet loss to Darby Allin, would’ve secured his spot as the #1 for the Gold but even a Ricochet win would’ve given Claudio the nod as a result of his head-to-head victory over Ricochet on November 27th.
Though Ricochet wasn’t able to secure a victory over Darby Allin in their final league match, he was able to eek out a 20-minute draw, thus netting each man one point, and putting Ricochet at 10 points as Castagnoli and ROH World TV Champion Komander prepared for their final league contests. Sadly for the Death Riders member, his own nefarious tactics were used against him by Komander, and the high-flying luchador upset the apple cart by beating Castagnoli in just 7:37, the fastest match in all of the C2! That result left Ricochet as the highest scoring man in the Gold League, and meant he was destined for a Semifinal fight with whoever ended up the #2 competitor in the Blue League.
That person was determined later in the night when AEW Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada fought for his survival, not just in the tournament but also as reigning Continental Champion, against The Hurt Syndicate’s Shelton Benjamin. If Okada lost, his 7 points would not have been enough to keep him from being eliminated from contention and thus he would’ve watched his title slip away without ever having been beaten for it. Instead “The Rainmaker” managed to score victory over Shelton in their first-ever singles match, bump his total up to ten points, and then wait for the result of Kyle Fletcher/Daniel Garcia to see how the Blue League would wrap up. A Fletcher victory would mean “The Protostar” was the clear #1 at 12 points while a Garcia victory would’ve tied the Continental and TNT Champion at 10, and created the need for a tiebreaker over the top spot as their head-to-head meeting resulted in a draw.
Luckily, depending on which man was looking at the situation, said tiebreaker wasn’t required as Kyle Fletcher’s win put Okada firmly in the #2 position, making it conceivable that the reigning Continental Champion could still leave WORLDS END 2024 with his title. In order to have that hope, Okada has to make it past Ricochet in their first-ever singles meeting! Now they have shared the ring before, twice during NJPW’s ROAD TO POWER STRUGGLE 2015 tour, both as trios matches and with each side taking one victory, but in AEW their only time in the same ring was at ALL IN: LONDON 2024 as entrants into the Casino Gauntlet.
With so much on the line, especially for Kazuchika Okada, who will score victory in this battle of the Blue’s #1 versus the Gold’s #2 and who will they face in the Finals with the Continental Championship on the line?
While the other half of the Semifinals features a first-time bout with no personal history between the two individuals involved, this Semifinal clash could not be more personal! The story of Kyle Fletcher and Will Ospreay is well-told, two men whose history dates back to 2018, who spent time in the ring as both ally and enemy, and whose bond Ospreay credits with helping him survive the quarantined days of the COVID-19 pandemic. As those restrictions began to lift, Ospreay formed United Empire alongside Great-O-Khan when he betrayed Kazuchika Okada and CHAOS during the 2020 G1 CLIMAX. Now whether or not the saga of Okada and Ospreay factors into the 2024 C2 all depends on how the Semifinals go, but suffice to say there’s a lot of bad blood there stemming from Ospreay’s betrayal four years ago.
Said betrayal led “The Aerial Assassin” to bring Aussie Open, Kyle Fletcher and Mark Davis, into The United Empire fold in September 2021, and the three made their first foray into All Elite Wrestling ahead of FORBIDDEN DOOR 2022 the following year. They returned two months later to participate in the AEW World Trios Title Tournament, and in 2023 Fletcher and Davis became official members of the AEW roster. That didn’t mean their relationship was quits though, Ospreay still made forays into AEW territory at the behest of Don Callis, defeating Kenny Omega at FORBIDDEN DOOR 2023 for the IWGP U.S. Heavyweight Title, beating Chris Jericho at ALL IN: LONDON 2023, and coming in at WRESTLEDREAM 2023 for a Don Callis Family victory over Jericho, Omega, and Kota Ibushi. It was just a few short weeks later that Kyle Fletcher became a member of The Don Callis Family, and it was with REVOLUTION 2024 that Ospreay joined his best friend as an official member of the AEW locker room.
What’s rather odd about these early days of Ospreay as an AEW roster member is how Don Callis elected to put members of his own family against one another, which led to Ospreay fighting Konosuke Takeshita at REVOLUTION 2024, Powerhouse Hobbs during the April 3rd DYNAMITE, and Kyle Fletcher in-between the two. That was a bout Ospreay won, making it three consecutive singles victories for Will, two prior to All Elite Wrestling, and possibly set the stage for what was to come over this year. Ospreay asked to be freed from his obligations to Don Callis despite Kyle’s protestations, and it was a request Callis shockingly agreed to, though not without the caveat that Ospreay owed him a favor.
That favor was called in ahead of the Tag Team Casino Gauntlet for a shot at The Young Bucks’ AEW World Tag Titles at DYNAMITE: GRAND SLAM 2024, and though it was rough at first, Ospreay and Fletcher managed to earn themselves a title fight at Arthur Ashe. Unfortunately they did not win the titles, one can only guess at how that would’ve changed the AEW landscape, but perhaps it was fortunate as a victory would’ve bound Ospreay to Don Callis once again. There was very little time to breath after that loss because Will faced Ricochet for the AEW International Title just one week later, a match where Konosuke Takeshita interfered to bring about a No Contest, and then he had to deal with both Ricochet and Takeshita in a Three-Way title fight at WRESTLEDREAM 2024.
The outcome of that battle was determined by the hand of Kyle Fletcher as he interfered on Takeshita’s behalf, assaulted Will Ospreay to hand the title to “The Alpha”, and dropped Ospreay with a Tiger Driver ’91 after the bout to put him on the shelf short-term. Ospreay tried to get his revenge at FULL GEAR 2024, but “The Protostar” beat him clean in the center of the ring. That loss, coming just a week before Ospreay began his 2024 Continental Classic journey, proved to be the fuel driving “The Aerial Assassin” forward in this tournament and has led him to the Semifinals after victories over Juice Robinson, Claudio Castagnoli, and Brody King. In fact it is that victory over Castagnoli that boosted Will to this match with Kyle Fletcher as the tiebreaker between Double C and Will was their head-to-head result.
As for Kyle Fletcher, “The Protostar” was utterly dominant in the C2 with four victories in five matches, victories over Shelton Benjamin, The Beast Mortos, Claudio Castagnoli, and TNT Champion Daniel Garcia, with his one loss coming at Mark Briscoe’s hands. Those 12 points secured Fletcher this top spot in the Blue League, but while last year’s tourney saw the Gold & Blue League leaders face each other in the Semi’s, this year it’s the top of the Blue facing Gold’s #2, and that’s why we are seeing Will Ospreay face Kyle Fletcher now!
Who will rise out of this emotionally-charged battle to vie for the Continental Championship in the Finals? Which of these former best friends will rise above the hate and focus on the goal at hand tonight in Orlando?
AEW INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH…
“The Alpha” Konosuke Takeshita(c) vs. Powerhouse Hobbs
It was nearly fifteen months ago that Powerhouse Hobbs made the choice to sign on with The Don Callis Family (https://youtu.be/xs1Hoaq9oIU?si=HH7cAWz4RqTPhlzR), and for a brief period of time it seemed like that act of selling his soul might actually be worth Hobbs’ sacrifice. He beat Chris Jericho on DYNAMITE: TITLE TUESDAY 2023, took out Paul Wight during the Like a Dragon Gaiden Street Fight on November 15, 2023, and even got an opportunity to challenge Jon Moxley for the IWGP World Heavyweight Title on the 4/24/24 edition of DYNAMITE thanks to Callis pulling some strings from his time working with New Japan Pro Wrestling. Unfortunately Hobbs sustained an injury during the course of that match which meant his usefulness to Callis ran its course and Don cut Powerhouse out of his business and The DCF.
That may be a decision that Callis comes to regret after tonight because since he returned to the AEW stage on November 6th as Ricochet’s mystery partner against AEW International Champion Konosuke Takeshita and “The Protostar” Kyle Fletcher, Powerhouse Hobbs has had his sights set on ripping that title from Takeshita’s waist!
Since his return, Hobbs and Takeshita have clashed multiple times inside the squared circle in both tag and multi-man competition, trading wins back and forth over the last two months, and sitting at 2-2 thus far. However this is their first singles match, not just since Hobbs’ return, but their first one-on-one ever as well as the first time Powerhouse Hobbs has challenged for the AEW International Championship. Though he’s a former TNT Champion, Hobbs’ all too brief reign ended on April 19th of 2023 and he has not held a title since that night in Pittsburgh when Wardlow ended the reign. So not only is this an opportunity to exact some revenge on The Don Callis Family, it’s a chance to be an AEW champion once again! In this battle between two of AEW’s behemoths, will it be Powerhouse who proves dominant or will Don Callis apply his family’s numbers advantage to the situation in order to keep the title in the family?
DYNAMITE DIAMOND RING MATCH…
Maxwell Jacob Friedman is a despicable human being, a supremely talented one in the realm of professional wrestling, but a despicable one nonetheless. Unfortunately that talent makes it a little bit easier for some fans to look the other way in regards to how rotten the former AEW World Champion is at his core, but sadly that’s the too often the case when it comes to a debate between talent versus moral worth.
One man who made the decision long ago that MJF’s talent was not an excuse for treating the world like trash was Adam Cole, and he made the choice to do something about it no matter the cost to himself. Did Cole make the choice after going to a draw with MJF in their World Title Eliminator bout on the 6/14/23 DYNAMITE? Was it before he and MJF were forced together in 2023’s Blind Eliminator Tag Team Tournament that began a few weeks later? Or was it after MJF and Cole lost in their World Tag Team Title fight against FTR but hugged after it was said and done?
There are so many moments during the saga of Adam Cole and MJF where one can look back and question just when Cole made the choices that led us all here to this moment in Orlando, FL, but ultimately it isn’t the “when” that matters but rather the “why”. Answering that question is just a matter of looking at Max’s entire track record since the moment his name got associated with AEW, just who it was associated with, and how he acted whenever he thought said person wasn’t looking. From day one MJF has been a jerk, and with each passing day it only got worse and worse and worse, and that is why Adam Cole took it upon himself to teach MJF a painful lesson in karma.
Was it morally right for Cole to get MJF to let down his guard and actually accept friendship? Was it morally right for Cole to let Maxwell Jacob Friedman think he had a genuine confidant in life? No, it wasn’t, but it is completely understandable why Adam took the steps he did to build MJF up just to tear him down. After all, this is the man who abused one friendship to get into All Elite Wrestling, and then disposed of it as soon as it was no longer convenient. This is a man who used and abused the services of Wardlow for as long as the former 2-Time TNT Champion could tolerate it. This is the man who used and abused The Pinnacle while it suited him, who stacked a Firm on his side when it was convenient, who slide into The Inner Circle when it worked in his favor, and who has treated every single person he’s encountered in the AEW sphere (not to mention the rest of his life) as if they’re beneath him.
Everyone else has tried to punch MJF in the face to get him back for his crimes, Adam Cole was just the first one who chose psychological/emotional warfare instead of fisticuffs, and did he ever suffer for his own sins in this process. Cole shattered his ankle over the course of this game, an injury so severe he lost 13 months of his career in the process of recovery, and many (including himself) questioned if Adam would ever be able to return. Yet even when Cole did return, specifically at DOUBLE OR NOTHING 2024 though that wasn’t in a competitive role, he had to hear the crowd cheer MJF despite knowing in his heart that the affable jerk routine was purely an act.
Still, it was only a matter of time before MJF played his insecure little hand and all it took was Will Ospreay pushing him just a bit to get Max’s house of cards to crumble. Adam Cole was right about who MJF was at his core, an insecure man-child who couldn’t bear the thought of the AEW fans loving anyone else besides him, but did the actions of Cole and Undisputed Kingdom insure that to be the case? Did his betrayal insure the walls around MJF’s fragile ego would forever remain, only now utterly impenetrable? That’s a question we will never have the answer to, but what we do know is that the rest of All Elite Wrestling has had to suffer because of what Cole did to Max, specifically men like Will Ospreay and Daniel Garcia who had to deal with him over the last several months, and others such as Roderick Strong who tried to do right by their friend and paid the price. MJF is horrid, of that there is no doubt, but Adam let himself become horrid as well in order to prove a point. Cole gave MJF his just desserts a year ago at WORLDS END 2023, but showed the world he’s just as capable of being as manipulative as Max if the situation is justifiable.
That old saying most of us were taught as children about two wrongs not making a right, well it couldn’t be more apropos to an issue than those between Adam Cole and Maxwell Jacob Friedman, but the question isn’t about who’s right or wrong because they have both been very wrong. It’s more if the ends will justify the means and if everything Cole did to get here (both to MJF and to himself) will be worth it if he’s the one standing with the Dynamite Diamond Ring on his finger instead of Maxwell Jacob Friedman…
TBS CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH…
Mercedes Moné vs. Kris Statlander
At FULL GEAR 2024 Kris Statlander took TBS Champion Mercedes Moné to her limit in their title fight, pushing the defending champion for nearly 20 minutes before “The CEO” finally found a way to defeat the former TBS Champion. It was a moment for Mercedes that served to solidify her belief that she is the greatest TBS Champion of all-time, but one for Statlander that only served to further fuel her desire to reclaim the title she never truly lost.
See, when Statlander lost the title at FULL GEAR 2023, it was in a Three-Way contest with Skye Blue and Julia Hart with Julia beating Skye to win the title rather than Statlander. Prior to November 23rd at FULL GEAR 2024, Stat never had an opportunity to reclaim the title and she has publicly stated that the road she traveled the last six months was a direct result of losing the title without opportunity for redemption. For better or worse, she allowed that loss (along with the influence of Stokely Hathway) to poison her relationship with Willow Nightingale and drag her down a dark path that culminated in a Chicago Street Fight between the two former friends at ALL OUT 2024. As unfortunate as it was that the issues between Stat and Willow got so bad they had to throw down in Street Fight, it also proved necessary for Stat to snap back to reality and see just how far she’d fallen.
In the aftermath of that Chicago Street Fight, Statlander refocused herself on the goal of reclaiming the TNT Title rather than wrecking the life of her former best friend. She won six consecutive matches after ALL OUT 2024 en route to challenging Mercedes for the TBS Title, and though she lost that battle, the war wasn’t over and she hasn’t allowed it to break her spirit like it did one year prior. In fact, Statlander has even shown remorse where it pertains to Willow Nightingale, wishing her good luck at WRESTLE DYNASTY 2025 with the International Women’s Cup and lending a helping hand when needed:
The remorse Statlander feels is obvious, the regret is clear in her in ability to accept the gratitude of Willow, so instead of dealing with that, Kris has chosen to deal with the TBS Championship one more time:
With that challenge, and the arrogant acceptance speech given by Moné, it will be Round 2 tonight during WORLDS END 2024! “The CEO” has already declared herself the greatest TBS Champion of all-time, but that’s such a fascinating thing to dissect. Mercedes has been utterly dominant since coming into AEW, undefeated over the course of 12 matches with 11 successful title defenses during her 216-day reign, and she’s actually surpassed the length of Statlander’s reign, but Kris still has more defenses with 16 over 174 days. They are both elite athletes, among the best to ever step into the ring, and each has a reasonable claim to be the best as the level of competition each faced as champion was consistently filled with top-tier athletes rather than women just hoping for lighting to strike.
Statlander averaged a defense every 10 days whereas the other four champions hit closer in the 18-20 day range, Moné has the distinction of carrying two titles from two different companies simultaneously and defending both, Statlander is on the cusp of becoming the first 2-Time TBS Champion, Mercedes has designs on shattering every record surrounding this title; however this return bout sways, there’s no question based on FULL GEAR 2024 that these two warriors bring out the best in one another once that bell rings and it’s the fan who really wins no matter who gets their hand raised at the end of the bout!
