The Hero World Challenge is enjoying a special year in 2024.
Tiger Woods will be the tournament host for the 25th time this week, as his event heads to Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas for the annual season-silly kickoff. A field of 20 golfers will battle it out over 72 holes of stroke play to determine a winner.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the event’s defending champion, and he finished runner-up to Viktor Hovland in 2021 and 2022.
And with the tournament coming up on its 25th anniversary, there have been plenty of notable statistics to occur during its existence.
Hero: What to know about the 2024 Hero World Challenge
Here’s a look at the notable stats and numbers for the Hero World Challenge ahead of its 25th edition.
The first World Challenge came in January 2000, where Tom Lehman won at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The second one was later that year in December, with the event moving to Sherwood Country Club in California. Davis Love won the first of his two World Challenges.
Only two World Challenges have been decided by a playoff, with the tournament host on the losing end each time. Graeme McDowell won in 2010 before Zach Johnson knocked off Woods in 2013.
Albany Golf Club is the second-longest host of the World Challenge, with this week being the ninth time the event has been contested there. The event was also held at Isleworth in Florida once, Grayhawk once and Sherwood hosted 14 times from 2000-13.
The host has the record for the number of tournament wins at the World Challenge with five. He also has five runner-up finishes.
Hero is the fifth sponsor of the World Challenge and the longest-running partner. Past sponsors include Target, Northwestern Mutual, Chevron and Williams. One year, in 2012, the event didn’t have a sponsor and was just the World Challenge.
Jordan Spieth ran away from the field at Isleworth, winning by 10 shots in 2014.
The event moved to 18 players in 2008 and then to 20 in 2021.
Seventeen golfers have won the Hero World Challenge, with four of them doing so more than once.
2024 is the silver anniversary for the World Challenge.
The same year Spieth set the record for margin of victory was the same week he shot 26 under. Bubba Watson has the lowest score at Albany, shooting 25 under in 2015.
