Alabama Department of Labor releases data on top jobs in August
In August 2024, the top jobs in Alabama included Registered Nurses, retail salespersons, and supervisors of retail sales workers, according to the Alabama Department of Labor’s Labor Market Information (LMI) Division. The state saw 84,605 job ads posted during the month, reflecting a 6.0% decrease from July.
Among the most sought-after roles were Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, and Fast Food and Counter Workers, with a combined total of 13,511 job ads in these categories.
The data, collected from AlabamaWorks.alabama.gov, job boards, corporate sites, and social media, also revealed salary insights for 32,498 positions. Of these, 8,443 jobs offered salaries above $70,000, while 9,528 fell within the $35,000 to $49,000 range. Another 5,801 roles offered between $50,000 and $69,000, and 8,726 jobs had salaries under $35,000.
Walmart led the top employers with 2,079 ads, followed by Huntsville Hospital with 1,139. Other major employers included UAB Medicine (813), Jack’s Family Restaurants (518), USA Health (468), and The University of Alabama at Birmingham (466).
The HWOL Occupation Focus for the month highlighted Industrial Machinery Mechanics, who repair and maintain industrial machinery and distribution systems. This field typically requires a high school diploma or GED, along with two years of related experience or vocational training. The median advertised salary for these positions is $60,544, and Alabama anticipates 1,615 annual job openings in this field.
