Alamo Heights girls’ golf emotional after winning back-to-back state championships

The Alamo Heights girls’ golf team reigns supreme in Class 5A for the third time in four years.

The Mules successfully defended their UIL 5A state championship by four strokes, finishing with a total score of 601 across the two-day tournament at Legacy Hills Golf Club on Tuesday.

Abilene Christian University commit Julia Vollmer was Alamo Heights’ top finisher with a two-over-par 146. Vollmer is now a three-time state champion within the Mules program.

“Every single year at state, I’ve had the privilege of being the last group on the 18th hole,” Vollmer said. “Every year, my teammates have come and given me a big hug. That’s always going to be a memory that I’m going to hold every single year.”

Vollmer and her teammates described the victory as very emotional.

“I was in tears,” she said. “It’s weird because it’s happy because you win — but it’s also very bittersweet, almost sad that I have to leave. We just are all really good friends.”

“I’m not usually an emotional person, but just running out to hug Julia when she made that last putt on 18, I couldn’t help but tear up,” University of St. Andrews commit Kat Salisbury said. “This is our goal at the end and to realize we did exactly what we always wanted to do — I can’t help but get emotional.”

Alamo Heights won the state title in 2021, 2023 and 2024. In 2022, the Mules finished runner-up on the leaderboard by just one stroke.

“You get that third one, and you’ve put yourself in a position that not many teams have won three state championships in any sport,” Mules girls’ golf head coach Brent McCuiston said. “I would like to think that third one puts us in the conversation as one of the best girls golf teams in the state. I am thrilled that we were able to get there, and hopefully, we’ll have a chance to compete for another one next year.”
