Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour adds Doha World Cup gold to impressive 2024 season

2023 World uneven bars silver medallist Kaylia Nemour of Algeria continued her winning ways Friday (19 April) at the Doha (Qatar) World Cup.

The 17-year-old posted a 15.366 in the uneven bars final to claim the gold by more than a point. The Philippines’ Levi Ruivivar was second at 13.633, followed by Alena Tsitavets, a neutral athlete, at 13.600.

Panama’s Karla Navas was the women’s vault winner after recording a 13.850 average score. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s An Chang Ok was right behind at 13.833, while Bulgarian Valentina Georgieva took bronze at 13.466.

In the men’s competition, Kazakhstan’s Milad Karimi won the opening final on the floor exercise with a 14.766, holding off Team GB’s Luke Whitehouse (14.566). Karimi’s compatriot Dmitriy Patanin rounded out the podium with a 14.500.

The men’s pommel horse final was a battle of titans with three world medallists in the final.

Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, the 2022 silver medallist and 2023 bronze medallist, put up a massive 15.500 for the win ahead of Chinese Taipei’s Lee Chih Kai’s 15.400. Lee was the 2019 silver medallist and 2018 bronze medal winner. Two-time, defending world pommel horse champion Rhys McClenaghan of Ireland finished third, scoring 15.233.

The first day of finals competition wrapped up on the still rings where Armenia’s Vahagn Davtyan held off Azerbaijan’s Nikita Simonov, 14.833 to 14.800. France’s Samir Ait Said finished with bronze with 14.633.

Competition in Doha concludes Saturday (20 April) with the men’s vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar and women’s balance beam and floor exercise.
