All Aboard: World’s largest steam locomotive to stop in Piggott

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – The world’s largest operating steam locomotive will chug its way through Northeast Arkansas next month with a planned stop in Piggott.

Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 Heartland of America Tour will make a 30-minute stop at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at the Jackson Street Crossing.

During its stopover, history buffs and train aficionados will get an up-close look at the massive locomotive.

According to UP, Big Boy No. 4014 was delivered in December 1941 and retired in December 1961 after traveling 1,031,205 miles during its 20-year service.

In 2013, Union Pacific reacquired the locomotive from a California museum. Following a multi-year restoration, it returned to service in May 2019.
