Could an Amazon facility be coming to Redding?
The Redding City Council on Tuesday will go into closed session to talk to an Amazon.com Services LLC representative about the company’s interest in Stillwater Business Park.
Under negation will be the price and terms for Lot 11B in the park, according to the agenda item.
Because it’s a closed session item, the city at this point is mum on the details.
“This is really the only public information that is to be given right now,” Jason Gibilisco, management assistant to City Manager Barry Tippin, said when asked about Amazon’s plans if it purchased the property.
Lot 11B is 57 acres at the south end of the city-owned park on Venture Parkway. The site is next to the lot that the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection purchased a few years ago. Cal Fire wants to build a new regional facility in the business park, but work on the project has yet to start.
An Amazon spokeswoman said she was not immediately familiar with the company’s interest in Redding, so she would look into it further and get back to the Record Searchlight later this week.
The company had created 153,000 full- and part-time jobs in California as of January 2024, according to its latest economic impact report.
Amazon’s interest in Redding comes as the company plans to close facilities in Yolo County near Sacramento and in Irvine.
The Sacrament Bee reported last week that Amazon will close the warehouse in Yolo County on Oct. 30 and the one in Irvine on Nov. 7. The closures will affect hundreds of jobs.
While it’s not known what type of facility Amazon would open in Redding, the company operates a number of fulfillment centers around the world, including many in California. Employees at the centers receive, pack and ship customer orders.
Amazon has 59 fulfillment and sortation centers and 62 delivery stations in California, according to its economic impact report.
Meanwhile, interest in Stillwater Business Park has picked up after the park sat vacant for a decade.
PACE Engineering of Redding opened its new headquarters in Stillwater in the fall of 2021.
Work is well underway on the Pepsico/Frito Lay distribution center, which is across the street from PACE on the park’s main road. The new facility will be 18,000 square feet, which includes 15,000 square feet of warehouse space and 3,000 square feet of offices.
Rebecca Baer, president and CEO of the Economic Development Corp. of Shasta County, did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment. The Shasta EDC markets Stillwater Business Park for the city.
