Amazon’s hit 2021 MMORPG, New World, is finally being ported over to consoles later this year. Developed by Amazon Games Orange County, New World was wildly popular upon launch, but the game’s staying power has waned over the last few years. Bringing the MMORPG to new platforms will likely give the title a much-needed shot in the arm, and it’ll allow players to enjoy the game without requiring a gaming PC.

After a handful of delays and a great deal of hype surrounding the game’s release, New World came out on Windows PCs in September 2021. As Amazon Games’ second major AAA title, the game had a lot to prove, especially following the launch failure of Crucible, another multiplayer game from the company. Unfortunately, New World got off to a bit of a rough start for a variety of reasons, from lengthy queue times and lackluster endgame content to overpriced microtransactions and weak plot threads. Despite the player count steadily declining due to these issues, the game was able to improve sentiment among some fans over the next few months with consistent content updates and eventual major expansions, like 2022’s Brimstone Sands. And now, gamers on next-gen consoles will soon be able to experience these improvements for themselves.

Valorant is Finally Coming to PS5 and Xbox

Riot Games officially announces that its competitive 5v5 hero shooter Valorant will finally make its way to console platforms this year.

During Geoff Keighley’s annual Summer Game Fest event, Amazon Games announced that New World will finally come to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on October 15, 2024, under the title, New World: Aeternum. Despite the name change, these console ports will contain all content from the original PC version of the game, including the Rise of the Angry Earth expansion. This news about the Amazon MMO releasing on consoles was actually leaked hours in advance of its official reveal in an advertisement on the PlayStation Store, of all things. Nonetheless, not everything that Amazon had to share about the game was spoiled, as the company provided some extensive details about what’s being added to New World alongside these console ports.

New World: Aeternum Could Mark a Turning Point for the MMORPG

In a press release, Amazon Games revealed that Aeternum will bring some of the biggest improvements New World‘s seen since launch, including features like a “large-scale player-vs.-player zone, a challenging 10-player raid, end-game solo trials, an upgraded leveling experience, new character archetypes, a revamped dialogue system, and much more.” In addition, “competitive and cooperative online cross-platform play” will be fully enabled upon New World‘s release on consoles. The game will even include “target locking and aim assist, virtual cursor, controller navigation and accessibility features” on consoles, according to Amazon.

New World: Aeternum will launch digitally at $59.99 USD on next-gen consoles and PC. Though Aeternum will be free for those who own the base game and the Rise of the Angry Earth expansion on Steam, players who only own the base game will have to purchase the aforementioned expansion to experience Aeternum‘s content. Hopefully, this major update will mark a turning point for New World and bring a wave of new and returning players to the game, in the same way that other expansions managed to save MMOs.
