Antique store opening for final weekend in business in downtown Cameron

CAMERON, Texas (KWTX) – An antique shop in downtown Cameron is getting ready to close their doors for good after spending years bringing unique finds into Central Texans homes.

On the courthouse square in Cameron, you’ll find General Mercantile Antiques. It’s where the past and present meet.

The owners here have a history of their own in taking what some would call old and giving it new life.

“They have incredible things here. Everything from small knick knacks to big beautiful pieces of antique furniture,” says Molly Graham who has lived in Milam County for 30 years. She says through those years she has gotten to know the owners of the store well.

“The antique business itself has been a huge contributing member of the downtown community. They are just wonderful people,” Graham says.

The owners tell KWTX that they do have day jobs and bringing you these antiques was a hobby for them. But with their storefront not being close to a main road, the slow foot traffic makes the vision no longer sustainable.

Graham says that hasn’t been a problem since the closure was announced. “A steady stream of people and we felt really happy about that. We came in last weekend to check it out and we have friends from out of town who have been,” she explains. “Our friends from out of town said they had to wait in line to check out last weekend. And we said ‘man, I wish it would have been like that before.’”

This is the store’s final weekend in business with their last day open being December 1. Most of their items are half off.

“If you are at all interested in cool finds, you need to get to Cameron and check this out while you still have a chance,” Graham says.

General Mercantile Antiques is located at 107 W. Main St. Cameron, Texas 76520.
