Apple Confirms iPhone 16 Surprise Restart Issue To Be Fixed In Days

If your iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro has been unexpectedly restarting, you’re not alone. Reports have been saying that some users have seen crashes 10 times a day. Now, Apple has confirmed that help is coming in the form of the soon-to-be released iOS 18.1.

The next iPhone software release, iOS 18.1, is coming before the end of October, that is, in the next week or so. It is highly anticipated, mostly because it will unleash Apple Intelligence for the first time. But it will also fix other bugs, add some other features and fix this random crash issue.

As reported by MacRumors, “There have been reports about unexpected restarts since the new iPhone 16 models launched. Affected users see the iPhone’s display either stop responding or slow down with touch input, and then the iPhone will restart. The issue seems to pop up randomly, and it could also impact devices used in StandBy mode. Some users have seen 10 to 20 crashes per day, while other users have seen fewer restarts.”

You could say these crashes are a nuisance rather than a crisis, though the cumulative effect of such an issue over a day would become extremely annoying. There were no easy ways to overcome the issue, with a fresh install or not reinstalling from an iCloud backup, both something of a faff, seemingly the way to overcome it.

Now, MacRumors says that it’s about to be fixed: “Apple has confirmed that the iOS 18.1 update will fix the restart issue, and it is mentioned in the iOS 18.1 release notes included with the release candidate that came out today.”

So, when will the general release version of iOS 18.1 be out? Apple has only said before the end of October, and since Apple likes to release on a Monday or Tuesday, Oct. 28 and Oct. 29 are strong candidates.

But it’s still possible that it could come sooner, say as soon as Wednesday, Oct. 23 or Thursday, Oct. 24.

As well as this timely fix, and the much-vaunted Apple Intelligence, there will be other new features, such as the capability to record phone calls and take Spatial Photos on the iPhone 15 Pro.
