Apple Plans To Release AirTag 2 Alongside M4 MacBook Air In The Spring With Upgraded Ultra Wideband Chip And More, But The Same Design
It has been more than three years since the company introduced its highly regarded item-tracking accessory called the AirTag, and it appears that the company is working on a new model. Some users might wonder what new additions the company could bring to the AirTags, and according to a new report, the company will add a slew of them for next year’s refresh. AirTag 2 is expected to arrive alongside the iPad Air refresh and the new M4 MacBook Air models in the Spring.

Apple’s AirTags have helped countless users locate their lost or misplaced items and baggage. The company is also releasing new features for the AirTags, which will now work with airlines to allow them to locate lost baggage with item location sharing. Mark Gurman notes in his latest Power On newsletter that Apple plans to release the new AirTag 2 in mid-2025.
In May, I reported that Apple is working on a new AirTag — code-named B589 — for release around the middle of next year. That accessory has now progressed in manufacturing tests, and Apple is getting ready to bring it to market.
This is not the first time that we have heard details on the second-generation AirTag, as analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also stated that the company will launch the accessory at some point next year. However, the release time frame mentioned by the two analysts is different. While Gurman points to a Spring launch, Kuo stated that mass production of the AirTag 2 has been postponed from the last quarter of this year to next year. While he did not provide an exact reason for the delay, we could see the accessory make its way to the public sooner rather than later.
The AirTag 2 will come with an improved chip for better location tracking, potentially with the second-generation of its Ultra Wideband chip that made its way out with the launch of the iPhone 15 lineup last year. Gurman also claims that the second-generation of the AirTag will also feature a built-in speaker, which will be put in place as an anti-staling measure. Externally, the analyst believes that the design will remain the same as the current model, but the range of the accessory is slated to be greatly improved.
Kuo has previously noted that the AirTag will feature integration with the Vision Pro, but it remains to be seen how the company is aiming to implement its decision. We will share additional details on the new AirTag as soon as further details are available.
