Ariana Grande Gave Glinda the Good Witch a High-Fashion Makeover in Mugler
With Wicked‘s highly-anticipated release just around the corner, you bet Ariana Grande showed up to her Saturday Night Live hosting gig in a Glinda the Good Witch-coded look. What we didn’t expect, however, was the high-fashion twist on Glinda’s princess style she delivered.
As the show’s second time host, Grande stepped out on stage for her opening monologue in a hot pink corseted silk dress from the Thierry Mugler archives via vintage dealer Lily et Cie. The midi-length dress—which featured a voluminous tulip-shaped hemline and a bustier bodice with boning—first made its debut during the iconic fashion designer’s fall-winter 1982 runway show, with models pairing it with opera gloves and pointy-toe heels.
Grande, for her part, ditched the gloves, but accessorized with a matching pair of pink velvet pumps and diamond jewelry. She pulled her blonde hair back into a sleek bun with a side part and finished off her glam with a soft pink makeup palette that included glossy lips, rosy cheeks, and a shimmery lids.
During her monologue, Grande promised not to talk about Wicked, but managed to sneak in a joke about her role as Glinda. “This year has been truly amazing. I got to play Glinda in the Wicked movie, which is awesome because I’m such a theater kid and it’s every theater kid’s dream to either play Glinda or Elphaba, ” she said, before delivering the punchline. “Well, it’s every theater kid’s dream to lose their virginity, but their second dream is, of course, to be in Wicked.”
