Ariana Grande Serves Up a Sweet Tribute with Her Pink Gingham Dress

Ariana Grande is slowly branching out from her streak of Glinda pink, and while last night didn’t see her stray from the color entirely, she made a new reference to Wicked with some subtle sartorial cues.

For the Los Angeles premiere of the Broadway film adaptation, the pop star paid tribute not just to Wicked, but the Wizard of Oz. Her sweet ensemble, a custom design by Thom Browne, featured a fitted corset-style bodice and a voluminous hoop skirt with a slightly tiered hemline. The silhouette is one she’s adopted previously on the press tour, and nods to the iconic gown worn by her onscreen persona.

Naturally, pops of Glinda pink were included in the design as well, though the gown also flaunted a soft gingham print—presumably a reference to Dorothy’s checkered dress from the original Wizard of Oz film. A matching bolero with puffy sleeves helped bring the tribute full-circle, while a pair of matching gloves covered up Grande’s hands. Below the sizable skirt of her dress, a pair of sparkling silver heels peeked out, offering one last nod to the red slippers that started it all.

The “We Can’t Be Friends” singer wore her blonde hair slicked back into a bun, adding a gingham bow to the updo to match her ensemble. She completed her look with pearl stud earrings, as well as a soft makeup look that included her signature winged eyeliner.

Grande has opened up on multiple occasions about Glinda being her dream role, and recently shared that her character has rubbed off on her. “Glinda’s makeup kind of made me transform my entire look and my entire relationship to makeup. I just love it so much,” she said in new behind-the-scenes video. “There’s no thick eyeliner, there’s no heavy crease, it’s just really warm and open and pretty and, you know, the lashes are in a cat shape, which still gives you the cat eye lift that I usually love, but it’s also just a more honest representation of what you look like.”
