Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame game awards scholarship recipients

Even a new site for the Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame 2024 All-Star Softball Game on Wednesday couldn’t contend with Mother Nature.

A torrential downpour forced the game’s cancellation in the top of the second inning at Ashland University’s Deb Miller Field at the Archer Sports Complex with the Home Team holding a 2-0 edge.

The hope was the turfed field would ensure the game would have a better chance of being played but the heavy rain showers proved otherwise.

“It was disappointing that we were rained out but I was happy the kids got to play on the field and we did get the pictures in,” noted Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame President Nancy Noble. “The Deb Miller Field is fabulous. Thanks to Ashland University for the use of their field.”

Mapleton’s Holly Earl tripled with two outs in the top of the first inning for the Visitor Team but was stranded there.

In the bottom of the first, Crestview’s Sophie Durbin beat out a perfect bunt for a hit, stole second, and later scored when Mapleton’s Heidi Earl singled. Earl later scored on an error.

Northwestern’s Gabby Cuber led off the top of the second with a single but two batters later with a 2-0 count on Hillsdale’s Keira Filius, the downpour forced both teams to their respective dugouts and the eventual cancellation.

Bill Mills Scholarship Winners

Before the game, six area students were announced as Bill Mills Scholarship recipients of $750 each.

Jenna Hartson of Ashland High School will be attending Otterbein University this fall to pursue a degree in primary education. Hartson was one of the 14 valedictorians of her class and this past year was named the Most Valuable Player on the Ashland High School volleyball team. She is a 4-year Academic Scholar and 4-year Scholar Athlete and on the Honor Roll every semester.

Kailyn Moneer of Hillsdale High School will attend Kent State University this fall to pursue a business administration major and a Healthcare administration minor. As a member of Hillsdale’s varsity soccer team, she was awarded the OSSCA Leadership Award, given to one female soccer player in Ohio, and the HHS Leadership Award, a Scholar Athlete from 2020-2024 and on the Honor Roll 20-20-2024.

Emma Roar of Mapleton High School will attend Johns Hopkins University this fall to pursue a degree in international relations. A member of the Mapleton varsity golf team, she was the Team Captain in 2022 and 2023. Roar was Mapleton’s valedictorian, has been involved in 4-H since 2014, and from 2020-2023 was on the Distinguished Honor Roll, and was a member of the Mapleton Academic Challenge Team.

Kyle Sloter of Mapleton High School will attend Ohio Northern University to pursue a pre-dental degree. Sloter was the Mapleton basketball team’s Most Valuable Player and earned 12 varsity letters (4 basketball, 4 track, 3 football, and golf). He surpassed 1,000 career points in basketball and holds Mapleton’s record for career steals. He is a member of the National Honor Society (2022-2024), OHSAA Academic Gold Certificate (2024), and Firelands Conference All-Academic Team as well as Honor Roll.

Brock Durbin of Mapleton High School will attend Ashland University this fall to pursue a degree in marketing. He participated in track, golf, and wrestling at Mapleton. A four-time state qualifier, Durbin was a state runner-up this past season and last season in wrestling. He was named Mapleton’s Co-Wrestler of the Year in 2023, a state golf qualifier, and was a member of the Distinguished Honor Roll.

Aidan Neibert of Loudonville High School will attend The Ohio State University to pursue a major in chemistry on a pre-med track. He is a 4-year letter winner and 2-year Captain for the Redbirds soccer team and 3-year letter winner in football where he was the team’s kicker. His academic activities include: National Honor Society (2022-2024), President (2024); Class Officer (2023-2024) Vice President; member of the Leo Club (2023-2024); Marching and Concert Band 4-year letter winner, 1st Chair 1st Trumpet and a 3-year Section Leader. ReplyForward
