In case you missed it, fitness star Denise Austin recently posted another fun and informative workout video on Instagram. This time, the 67-year-old revealed how she maintains her toned abs while demonstrating two core-focused moves that are great for “women over 50.”
“OUR CORE…OUR LOWER BELLY needs to be STRONG at any age but especially for us women over 50!!!” Austin captioned the video. “Now that I’m 67 I focus and I try to incorporate more standing ab workouts into my routine which are not only a GREAT way to stay fit without ever having to get on the floor, but they help you to stabilize your body!!”
Austin continued: “These Lower Tummy Trimmers are incredible for targeting and tightening the lower belly, plus you can do them anywhere and in minimal amounts of space! Don’t let your age EVER hold you back…embrace it and take care of YOU so you can feel good at any age!!!”
Below, we break down the two moves Austin demonstrates for strengthening the core and lower belly.
Standing crunch
The first exercise Austin demonstrates is a standing crunch. To begin the exercise, Austin starts with her feet together and her hands on her hips. “Stand tall, and let’s begin,” she says. Next, Austin simply alternates bringing each knee up toward her chest while engaging the abdominal muscles. “Keep strong, keep the back straight, really important to tighten up your abs,” she says. “Bringing the knee toward your chest really helps the lower abs—something we all need.”
Twist and crunch
The next move builds on the first standing crunch, increasing the intensity. Austin begins by moving her hands from her hips to behind her head with her elbows out while maintaining the same movement with her legs. “Now we’re gonna add a little crunch to this,” she explains. “We’re gonna twist and crunch.” To do this, Austin simply brings the opposite elbow to whichever knee is crunching up toward her chest, alternating with every step.
Fans loved Austin’s informative video as usual. “You are such an inspiration and love learning new ways that are age-appropriate! ♥️” one fan wrote. “Core and balance are so important as we age!” another added. “I can’t believe you’re 67!! You look amazing and are an inspiration!!” another chimed in.
Looking for more tips? No matter what core exercises you add to your workout routine, Austin previously explained that the mind-muscle connection and learning how to engage your core is key when performing any abdominal exercises. “You have to learn how to tighten up your abs and contract your abs to really get them to work,” she previously told Prevention. “The idea is to really embrace all of the abdominal muscles—you could even practice it sitting—pulling in your abs, almost like you’re tightening up a corset. And it really helps to understand how to engage those abs correctly.”
