At 67, Denise Austin Demonstrates Her ‘Number 1’ Move for ‘Menopause Belly’

  • Denise Austin just shared one of her favorite exercises for targeting “menopause belly.”
  • The 67-year-old demonstrated a bicycle crunch, which she says is “the most effective” move for the core.
  • She explained the classic move “works your whole core.”

If you’re looking for a new move to help achieve a stronger core, fitness pro Denise Austin has you covered. The 67-year-old regularly shares easy workout moves for women over 50, and this time she’s sharing her “number one” exercise for targeting “menopause belly.”

“Here’s another menopause belly move for you this week…it may be an old move but one of the MOST effective when it comes to target toning your tummy,” Austin captioned the video. “This single exercise works your whole core…start with 30 seconds, and the more you do them the longer you will be able to last…give these a try today and you’ll feel it tomorrow!!”

In the video, Austin sits on her yoga mat while wearing a matching yellow workout set that shows off her toned abs. She asks her fans: “Do you want to know the number one best ab exercise to do to target the lower tummy, the whole front of the abs, and the waistline?” The move Austin is referring to is the bicycle crunch. “It works 110% of your abs,” she explains.

To perform the move, Austin simply lays on the mat with her hands behind her head, lifting her legs and shoulders off the floor. Next, she alternates which knee she brings in toward her chest, crunching her core as she taps her knee to the opposite elbow.

As always, fans enjoyed the informative video. “My favorite ab move! It’s tough but it works🙂,” one fan wrote. “Back to basics! Because they work!😊👍🏻,” another commented. “I haven’t done that in a while, but maybe I’ll add it back into my routine!” another chimed in.

While many of her fans appreciate Austin’s “menopause belly” workouts, it’s important to understand exactly what the term means. Sometimes, when women go through the various stages of menopause, they can experience a shift in hormones causing belly fat, also known as “hormonal belly” or “menopause belly.” Many hormones can do this, but for women in menopause, estrogen can have a noticeable effect.

During the onset of menopause the body experiences a decline in estrogen that may “create a shift in body composition which favors fat distribution towards the center of the body, around the abdomen,” Krista Gonzales, M.D., endocrinologist and educator at Pritikin Longevity Center previously told Prevention.

However, it’s important to note that you can’t pick and choose where you lose weight on your body. A balanced approach to decreasing belly fat—including cardio, nutritious eating habits, and weight training—can help you lose weight overall, if that is something you want to address. Adding effective core exercises like Austin’s can help tone a targeted area.
