WESTERLY — Improv Jones, the longest-running improv act in Rhode Island whose cast members include Trinity Rep mainstay Mauro Hantman, will make a debut performance at the United next week, bringing along plenty of “sense and sensibilities.”
While the United regularly hosts improv groups and shows organized by Brand Manager Lee Metzger, having Improv Jones appear in southern Rhode Island is a rarity and will be the group’s first appearance at The United.
Their signature brand of “silly” has earned them “Best Improv Comedy at the 2024 Motif Spoken Word Awards.”
“IJ is a unicorn in the improv world,” said Metzger in an email. “Most groups last maybe a couple years, but not much longer than that. Improv Jones has been performing together for over 30 years.
“Their collective experiences — from training at different schools and in different improv styles — makes their performances unpredictable, unforgettable, and impossible to replicate,” he added. “This will be IJ’s first performance at the U, and they are sure to show you something you’ve never seen before!”
In addition to Hantman, a founding member, who has performed in more than 80 productions at Trinity Rep and narrates audio books, members of the cast include Casey Seymour-Kim, a teacher of theater arts at Rhode Island College, and Tim Thibodeau, who helped start the Providence Improv Guild and has produced the Providence Improv Fest since 2014.
The show takes place on Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.
