Awkwafina tells lottery winners to ‘lay low’ as ‘Jackpot!’ hits Prime Video

LOS ANGELES — Most of us have wondered what we would do if we won the lottery. Would we talk about it? How would we use all that money? Do we make the world a better place, or get weird with what we buy?

In “Jackpot!,” the newest film from Prime Video, the year is 2030, and in California, Katie (played by Awkwafina), finds a winning ticket for the multibillion-dollar grand lottery. But there’s a catch: Anyone who finds Katie and kills her before the sun goes down gets to keep the billions.

“It’s a shot at the big time,” says Noel, a lottery protection agent played by John Cena.

Awkwafina has some advice for all future lottery winners, whether or not their life is literally on the line.

“Definitely lay low. Don’t do too much, right? Or is that what they say about crime? I don’t know! Like don’t do too much at first to throw them off, but you should do the most if you won the jackpot,” she says. “Have fun! Go to Benihana … have fun. Live, love, laugh … just get a Benihana size grill. You know what I mean? Host it yourself. Learn how to do a volcano onion,” she said in an interview with Spectrum News.

For Hollywood stars who appear to have it all, what would they consider to be their jackpot in life? Cena tells Spectrum News he lives out his lottery win every single day.

“I am very aware of that. I try to act accordingly. I try to be respectful of the opportunities that are given and those who help me. If there is a human that is my jackpot in my life, it’s got to be my wife,” he said.

Awkwafina and the film’s director Paul Feig told Spectrum News their jackpot has been making “Jackpot!”

“For me, it’s getting to work with people I love and admire,” said Feig. “I’ve just gotten to work with great people in what I’ve done. Nora [Awkwafina] and I met about four or five years ago and we really hit it off. We had to do something together. When this script came to me, Nora was already attached to it, so that’s my jackpot.”

“Jackpot!” is now streaming on Prime Video. It stars Awkwafina, John Cena Simu Liu and is directed by Paul Feig. It features some cameos by Seann William Scott and Machine Gun Kelly.
