Baby enters the world just minutes after her mom enters a local hospital
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – You’ve heard the term making a grand entrance. Well, that’s exactly what one of Toledo’s newest residents did. Plenty of babies have been born at ProMedica Toledo Hospital, but Amari Kynard’s arrival in this world was a bit different than most. A number of people were part of it, including a nurse who just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Amari Kynard came into this world on April 7. She is Brittney Hazlett’s fifth child, but she arrived before mom could make it to the labor and delivery room.
“I can’t wait until she’s older and I can tell her I didn’t know all this was going to come from her birth,” Hazlett said.
Amari Kynard was born in the lobby of Entrance C at Toledo Hospital. As soon as Hazlett walked into the building, she knew she needed help right away.
“I told the security guard I was in labor, and then my water broke,” Hazlett said.
It all happened so fast that Hazlett’s fiancée Matt Kynard was still outside.
“Matt was out parking the car and the security guard told him to leave it. He told him I was in labor. Matt came in with a blanket to catch her when she was born,” Hazlett said.
Just minutes after Hazlett entered the lobby, little Amari Kynard entered the world right in front of the front desk
“Her name is Amari Reign. Reign, like a queen,” Hazlett said.
There was another person who played a big role in the delivery. Claire Jakubowksi is a surgical ICU nurse at the hospital. It was a slow night, so she volunteered to take a patient’s therapy dog outside for a walk. And as she was coming back in, she saw Hazlett.
“Everybody asked what I was doing there at midnight and I told them I was walking a dog. It was the perfect chain of events,” Jakubowksi said.
Jakubowksi quickly sprung into action to help.
“She looked like she was in very severe pain. She looked like the baby was going to come out at any time. I asked if she was okay and she said she had to push and the baby would be here any time. The second she started pushing, the baby came out. She did an amazing job,” Jakubowksi said.
And of course, I had to ask.
“Claire, have you ever delivered a baby before?” 13 Action News Reporter Lissa Guyton asked. Jakubowksi responded with, “No!”
Needless to say, Jakubowksi’s co-workers were shocked when she came back with the story.
“I went back up to my unit and told them, ‘I just delivered a baby at Entrance C.’ Nobody believed me at first! They asked if it was a boy or girl and I told them I didn’t know because I didn’t even look!” Jakubowksi said.
Jakubowksi got the answer when she came back to work for her next shift. She went to visit mom and baby. Hazlett was excited to see one of the people who helped bring Amari Kynard into the world.
“I am so glad she came up to see us. I didn’t get to say thank you when it all happened. It happened so fast, we didn’t get to talk, so it was nice,” Hazlett said.
Everyone involved in this special delivery has quite a story to share about little Amari Kynard’s arrival.
To give you a better idea of how fast this all happened, Hazlett said it was only about five minutes between the time she walked in and Amari Kynard was born.
By the way, the labor and delivery team arrived right after Amari Kynard arrived and took mom and baby to the unit for evaluation.
