Back to School Shopping: How expensive will supplies be this year?

It’s already the start of a new school year for some students, which means shopping is in full swing.

This year at least 17 states are offering sales-tax holiday periods on school related items to help families save. Students of all ages can get a tax break on school supplies, clothes, shoes and electronics.

However, each state sets its own dates which are usually during July and August. According to the National Retail Federation, more than 55 percent of back-to-school shopping started last month.

The NRF said this school year families are expected to spend on average nearly $900 – the second highest amount in the survey’s history. The total back-to-school spending is expected to reach nearly $39 billion this year.
