Bangor Marathon features new logo honoring marathon world record holder

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – The Great Bangor Marathon has a new logo honoring the legacy of Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum.

Kiptum set the marathon world record in Chicago in 2023 before tragically passing away in a car accident in his home country in February.

Race organizers say he’s a great example for anyone around the sport.

“He had a great attitude towards training and a love for the sport of marathoning. He had outstanding performance, outstanding training. He was just a trailblazer in the sport of marathoning. This is a good year to have this great logo for the Bangor Marathon,” said David McIntyre, Race Director.

“The race starts right there near Paul Bunyan. We’re going to weave through the streets of Bangor, through all the architecture and rich history of this city. The race heads out Broadway, which is a nice, straight course. It turns around just south of the town of Kenduskeag and comes back through Bangor. We’ll see you at the starting line,” said Laura McIntyre, Operations Manager.

David McIntyre took two to three months to finish a painting of Kiptum while the logo planning was decided.

The Great Bangor Marathon is scheduled for Sun. June 23 at 7 a.m.

The McIntyres are looking for sponsors to fill a request list located on The Great Bangor Marathon Facebook page and LifestyleSportsGlobal.com.

Top three prizes stand at $1,000, $500, and $250, but could rise with sponsors and participants.
