SOCCER: GLENN CAPS UNBEATEN SEASON
John Glenn powered past North Branch 8-0, completing an undefeated run through the regular season.
The Bobcats enter postseason play with a 21-0-2 record, setting school and Bay County records for wins in a season.
Asher Clark went wild once again, this time tallying six goals and one assist. The junior has 47 goals on the season, six shy of the school record of 53 set by Ty Richards in 2008.
“It took us a bit to break through their line,” Glenn coach Brian Scherzer said. “One we did, Asher got on fire.”
Landon Kogelman and Lucas Blossom each scored one goal in the win. Ruben Rivera delivered two assists while Kogelman, Trent Phillips and Arrow VanWagoner each added one assist.
SOCCER: USA WINS A THRILLER
Brody Schefka delivered the lone goal of the game, spiriting the Unionville-Sebewaing/Cass City squad to a 1-0 victory over Memphis in Big Thumb action.
Schefka scored off a pass from Aleksander Nika for the win. Nika notched 13 defensive stops for USA (4-10-1, 2-7-1) while Keegan Elston registered seven saves in goal.
SWIMMING: BCW WINS TRIO OF EVENTS
Bay City Western posted three first-place finishes in its Saginaw Valley League matchup with Mount Pleasant and Davison.
The Warriors exceled with the relay lineup of Lizzie Rechsteiner, Ripley Andrus, Addy Russell and Alexis Schlatter, which captured top honors in the 200 freestyle relay (1:49.36) and placed second in the 400 freestyle relay.
Andrus was tops in diving (198.15) and Schlatter was first to the finish in the 100 freestyle (57.62). Schlatter also placed second in the 100 breaststroke while Rechsteiner was runner-up in the 50 freestyle and 500 freestyle. The squad of Jada Bragiel, Audrey Knochel, Kali Neymeiyer-Burr and Autumn Lyons placed third in the 200 freestyle relay.
SWIMMING: CENTRAL SHOWS PROGRESS
Bay City Central couldn’t keep up with Grand Blanc in a 121-64 loss in Saginaw Valley League action. But the Wolves set a pretty strong pace of their own in their home opener.
“Although the final score wasn’t close, there were a number of close races and we had 22 season bests,” Central coach Dave Staudacher said.
Central notched a pair of first-place finishes, with Lauren Boon winning the 500 freestyle in 5:53.31 then joining Coco Salazar, Lauren Bontekoe and Lauren Klawon to claim the 200 freestyle relay in 1:56.04.
GOLF: ANOTHER VICTORY FOR GLENN
John Glenn improved its dual record to 7-1 on the season, topping Pinconning 197-216 at Bay Valley.
Noelle Pobanz led the way with a new personal-best score of 44. Lauren Atkins shot 49, Alli Caldwell 50, Olivia Duprey 54 and Sydnie Barron 56 for the Bobcats.
“Sydnie Barronearns the shot of the day,” Glenn coach Pete Remington said. “She hit her ball into a bunker on hole 7 and waved me over to ask how she should play it. The only way she could take her stance and still hit the ball would be to stand outside the bunker and squat way down. The ball was at least a foot below her feet. We talked it over and she hit it out like a pro.”
Madison Bersano and Claire Charbonneau paced Pinconning with 49s, Sarah Yaros shot 53 and Eleanor Boettcher 65.
VOLLEYBALL: CASS CITY KEEPS IT ROLLING
No. 4-ranked Cass City ventured outside the conference to take on the Freeland challenge and passed with flying colors.
The Red Hawks rolled to a 25-15, 25-17, 25-18 victory in the non-league clash.
Shelby Ignash and Kacee Gray provided a potent 1-2 punch at the net, with Ignash slamming 16 kills and Gray 14. Ignash tallied 10 digs while Isabelle Phillips had eight digs and 21 assists. Kylie McKee delivered 23 serves and Alysa Fritz 11 assists in the win.
