Bayern Munich set for late Harry Kane fitness call before Aston Villa tie
Bayern Munich are set to make a late decision on the availability of striker Harry Kane before Wednesday’s Champions League tie against Aston Villa.
The 31-year-old sustained an ankle injury during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen following a collision. He was forced off after 86 minutes having received treatment on the pitch.
Bayern confirmed on Sunday Kane had undergone assessments and was receiving treatment after suffering a “painful knock”, and head coach Vincent Kompany said the England international had trained on Tuesday but a final call would not be made until Wednesday.
“You’ve seen Harry Kane on the pitch today. That went well,” Kompany said. “But we will have to wait and see how the situation is tomorrow and then tomorrow we will make the correct decision. But he trained today and hopefully everything will work out fine.”
Kane has started six of Bayern’s seven matches this season after missing the end of the 2023-24 campaign with a back injury. He has scored 10 goals in all competitions, including four during September’s 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb in his side’s Champions League opener.
However, Saturday’s draw with Bayern saw Kane fail to register a shot — the first time he had done so when starting a league match since September 2021.
Team-mate Serge Gnabry was full of compliments for Kane and was hopeful he would be available on Wednesday.
“I can only praise him,” Gnabry added. “A very good guy. On his football skills we don’t need to talk. He’s our main guy. Hopefully he can play tomorrow and hopefully he can be involved. He brought himself to the team very well and we are happy to have him.”
