Beer, sports and fall weather in Wilmington. Who could ask for anything more?

I don’t usually talk about sports in this column, but it is fall, and I am a sports fan. The World Series starting Friday night has a classic vibe for better or worse, with the New York Yankees taking on the L.A. Dodgers in a series I’m not overly invested in.

So, there’s baseball for a few more days, but with my Carolina Panthers near unwatchable in the NFL right now, my thoughts are turning to basketball. The NBA season just began, and the Charlotte Hornets are undefeated at 1-0 🙂 I’ve always got high hopes that my alma mater University of North Carolina Tar Heels will contend for yet another men’s basketball championship, plus my hometown University of North Carolina Wilmington Seahawks men’s team just added a pair of 7-footers to its roster. Let’s go!

So yes, fall weather, sports and lots of Wilmington events. Here’s what the weekend holds.

Weekend weather outlook

It’s going to be another glorious fall weekend, with highs near 80 and lows in the 50s Friday and Saturday. Things will cool off a bit Sunday, with highs in the 60s and our first real (though slight) chance of rain for October.

Go | See | Do

It’s a crazy-busy weekend in Wilmington, with an ample offering of festivals, performances, film screenings and more.

Downtown, the massive Lighthouse Beer & Wine Festival will hold sway at Live Oak Bank Pavilion. On stage, axe-murderess rock musical “Lizzie” is on the boards at North Front Theatre, with an original adaptation of horror movie “Night of the Living Dead” at Thalian Hall (read our review).

And there’s plenty of visual art as well, with Fourth Friday Gallery Nights downtown and the ARTFall show and sale at the Hannah Block USO/Community Arts Center. For the full list, check the link below.
