The Cincinnati Bengals have announced that rookie wide receiver Jermaine Burton won’t travel with the team due to a decision made by head coach Zac Taylor.

Burton, Cincinnati’s third round pick, continues to have a troubled first year in the NFL. When the Bengals drafted Burton in April, they were aware and had to answer questions about the red flags associated with his pre-draft profile.

Taylor said he was confident in the Bengals’ culture and believed Burton could thrive in a wide receiver room with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. This appears not to be the case as this isn’t the first time the team has had an issue with Burton.

The team made Burton a surprise inactive on Oct. 27 when the Bengals hosted the Eagles because the rookie didn’t “handle his business” during the week, according to Taylor. Burton’s issues continued through the season and his first year as a pro will end in him sitting at home while his team is playing in a must-win game against one of their division rivals.

Burton has caught four passes for 107 yards this season. In addition to a lack of production due to not being able to earn the trust of his coaching staff and teammates, he’s inability to prove to the organazation that took a chance on him he’s capable of being a profssional at the highest level is what makes the pick of Burton to this point a disappointment.

It remains unclear what Burton’s future in Cincinnati will be following this season. And for the Bengals to have this type of uncertainty for a player picked on Day 2 is a concern, to say the least.
