Best Bets: Week 5

Bets Bets continues to roll along, going 2-1 last week. We finished .500 overall in our picks last week thanks to Cal and Arizona State laying some eggs on the road, but through four weeks the Best Bets record sits at 9-4 (14-10 for all picks) and friends… that’s in the black. Let’s keep it going in Week Five!

Best Bets

Georgia (-2) @ Alabama

Georgia gets a chance to exact some revenge on Saban-less Alabama this week for knocking the Bulldogs out of the playoffs last year. This will be Kalen DeBoer’s first test as the new Crimson Tide coach, but Georgia will be too much for the Tide, even though the game is in Tuscaloosa. I don’t anticipate this game being a blow out, but the Bulldogs will win and cover the two point spread.

BYU (+3.5) @ Baylor

This is one of the more confusing spreads I’ve seen so far this year. BYU is undefeated and just dispatched Kansas State with ease last week. Baylor is 2-2 and is coming of a complete meltdown at the end of the game against Colorado, giving up a Hail Mary to send the game to overtime before losing thanks to a fumble into the end zone. The game is in Waco, but BYU is clearly the better team and they are getting more than field goal. Give me the Cougars to win outright.

Cincinnati @ Texas Tech (-2.5)

I’ve faded the Red Raiders twice this season to my peril, so I’m finally jumping on the bandwagon and picking Texas Tech to win at home by at least a field goal. Cincinnati seems to be finally moving in the right direction under Scott Satterfield, but the game is in Lubbock where Tech just finished beating a much better Arizona State team by eight points. This won’t be a large spread, but the Red Raiders will do enough to cover 2.5 points.

Worth a look

Washington State (+7.5) @ Boise State

Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty has captured hearts and minds this year with his stellar 459 yards rushing and nine touchdowns in only four games, but undefeated Washington State already has had two impressive victories so far in Texas Tech and rival Washington. I think Boise State will win the game, but the Cougars will keep it closer than a touchdown.

Arizona @ Utah (-12)

Utah is coming off a hard-fought win in Stillwater last week and faces a much easier foe at home in Arizona. The Wildcats are coming off a bye week, but just got completely smoked by a Kansas State team who then turned around and was smoked by BYU. The Utes will win this one easily, with or without an injured Cam Rising under center.

Liberty (-3.5) @ Appalachian State

Another spread to file under the “weird lines” category, Appalachian State is coming off blowout losses in two of the last three weeks, most recently at home to South Alabama. Liberty is undefeated, albeit against a very weak schedule. However, I expect them to beat the Mountaineers by at least a touchdown this week.
