It’s a brand-new year, and with that comes the age-old resolution to get fit.
Instead of buying a gym membership, you may consider setting up your own home gym.
But before you dive headfirst into buying a shiny new treadmill or resistance bands, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) has several suggestions for your investment.
No matter your age, the first thing the BBB recommends to successfully build your exercise room is to check with your physician to be positive your resolution is truly healthy for you.
“Also establish your fitness goals and know what type of equipment you need to accomplish those goals, and then check your home and make sure you have the adequate space to set something up,” said Better Business Bureau President and CEO Michele Mason.
Mason says once you have a plan and know what you want to purchase, visit a business in person and test out the equipment.
You want to find work out gear you’ll use in the long term that also fits into your long term budget.
“We always suggest that you use your credit card for your purchase so that if there is an issue, you can make sure you can work with your financial institution or the business,” said Mason.
Getting into shape can be dangerous if you don’t know how your new equipment works. Mason urges people to understand all the safety features that come along with your purchase.
She also advises everyone to be aware of any hidden fees or subscriptions, which commonly come with stationary bikes or treadmills.
“Some companies will also offer those as a free introduction, but that could end, you want to make sure that you understand what the cost would be and whether or not you have the right to cancel that before you start getting charged,” said Mason. “Also you want to make sure you understand refund policies that the company offers as well as what they’ll do if you should have any safety concern with the product.”
With a little planning and smart shopping, you’ll be on your way to a healthier, stronger you in 2025.
