Better Business Bureau is on the lookout for solar panel scams
ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) – Solar panels could be a power move but not when they could potentially be a scam!
If you want solar panels, the Better Business Bureau says to be very careful when getting installation offers.
Someone can contact you through email, phone, social media or even in person pretending to be a solar company salesperson. In some versions, the scammer is after your personal information. They ask you to fill out forms with your banking details to see if you qualify. Other times, the solar representative claims you need to pay upfront costs, which they promise will be reimbursed.
In other instances, they begin the installation of the solar panels but never return to finish the job. Or, they may install the panels and do a poor job, resulting in panels that do not work. If you reach out to the scammer, they will become unreachable and disappear with your money.
“Number one, don’t be pressured, look for references and get competitive prices on them and consider the age of the roof and don’t fill out any forms with your personal information that could be used against you,” said Bob Davis, President/CEO of Better Business Bureau. “We have a link on our website that says scam tracker and this will alert other people about the company that you are reporting.”
If you have received an offer for free solar panels, it could be a scam. Always look for businesses you can trust, such as accredited businesses using the BBB seal.
