Better Business Bureau releases tips to keep shoppers safe from scammers this holiday season

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – This year’s black Friday is different than in years past. Whether you’re shopping online or in-store, it’s important to be safe. And to avoid scammers.

Monde Donaldson with the Better Business Bureau spoke about the importance of being vigilant as you buy those perfect gifts.

“You’re seeing a lot of specials that start. And that’s what people start to get tricked because they fall for something that looks too good to be true,” Donaldson said.

One way you can stay safe is by using a credit card to make your purchases.

Credit card companies usually have protections in place to make sure that if you are scammed, you can get your money back.

“You want to use a credit card as you’re going into the holiday season because you have a much better chance of getting your money back if something is wrong. You want to watch for warranties and guarantees, return policies for all the stores, and one more thing. You always want to go slow and do your research,” Donaldson said.

And if you’re doing your shopping online, make sure you’re going to the right websites. Scammers will sometimes take the names of reputable businesses and change them slightly to throw victims off.

“If you see something online that looks great. Then make sure you’re dealing with Target, or Home Depot, Walmart, or whatever it might be. But watch out for those fake social media ads. That’s the big thing and the presales for black Friday. And watch out for copycat fake websites,” Donaldson said.

And remember to have a plan.

“Make a plan and have a budget. And stay within those perimeters. And just have a good time,” Donaldson said.
