Better Business Bureau warns of gift card scams during holiday season
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Gift cards have become a go-to choice for holiday shoppers looking for a quick and convenient present. However, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is cautioning consumers about the potential for scams that could turn a thoughtful gift into a frustrating experience.
Carl Bates, president of the Birmingham Better Business Bureau, says scammers are finding ways to steal money from gift cards before recipients can use them.
“If you have the gift receipt, every time you get a gift card, the person that buys it gets a receipt for the purchase, and there’s usually a secondary receipt that shows how much money was put on it. You need that receipt for sure, but understand the merchant doesn’t know whether you’ve already used it or it’s been stolen from you. So you have to be very careful about that, and a lot of times, there’s no recourse on those gift cards,” Bates explained.
Bates recommends taking a few key steps to protect your gift cards from scammers.
Check the Balance Immediately. Verify the card’s balance as soon as you receive it to ensure the funds are still intact.
Register the Card Online. If the retailer allows it, register the card online. This adds a layer of security and makes it easier to report any issues.
Keep Your Receipt. This can serve as proof of purchase if the card is compromised.
Despite these precautions, Bates says consumers may want to think twice before giving a gift card.
“Consider giving cash instead,” he advised, as it eliminates the risks associated with gift card fraud.
As holiday shopping ramps up, taking these simple steps can help ensure your gift reaches its intended recipient without any surprises.
