BISD students exploring culture from around the world

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – Students at Burkburnett High School had the chance to explore eight countries today without leaving their campus.

That trip around the world was made possible thanks to a student-led organization called Student-2-Student, which encourages members to appreciate the diversity on campus.

This was an event enjoyed by all, but especially the foreign exchange students.

All year around, members of Student 2 Student work to ensure students feel included while on campus and today’s event was no different.

A member of the organization she said it’s important to take the time to learn what makes us unique.

“We can learn so many stories and experiences from them. You know, all these military students and different places. They could bring so much to us, and just educate us on their culture.” Emily Antonio said.

The commons area at Burkburnett High School was full of food and novelties to show students and staff cultures from around the world.

“Mochi and matcha cookies and also we brought posters and calligraphy.” Foreign exchange student Ohbuchi Yuka said.

She was thrilled to share her culture with her peers before heading back to Japan this summer.

“I’m so glad to be in this event and the school, and I hope that after I leave Japan I can introduce other countries to my culture too.” She added.

Ognwa Yuka decided to dress for the occasion.

“Yukatas like when we go to the festivals like in summer we wear this.”

“I think it’s always good to learn about someone else’s culture and it kind of just brings everyone together.” Student Valerie Martinez shared.

Students that represented Mexico prepared homemade beverages and snacks, they also handed out educational pamphlets.

“Trying to like, show people more than it’s not just the stereotypical mariachi bands, ponchos, sombreros. It’s so much more, there’s so much history, culture just so much to it and music.” Student Ana Cervantez said.

“Just because our school is diverse and everything, this helps our school become a family and more united,” Antonio explained.
