Blake Shelton and Taylor Sheridan join forces for ‘The Road’

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Blake Shelton and Taylor Sheridan are ready to hit the road — literally.

On Monday, November 11, CBS announced a new singing competition called The Road, set to premiere in fall 2025. This isn’t your typical singing show. In true Sheridan style, The Road will follow a headlining superstar as they tour across the country, looking for the next big talent in country music. And yes, the contestants will have to win over fans city by city to stay in the game.

“I’m a big fan of Taylor’s incredible work,” Shelton, 48, shared, adding that he’s excited to team up with Sheridan, 54, and longtime collaborator Lee Metzger. “I know a thing or two about singing competitions and what it’s like to chase a music dream and live life on tour. I’m looking forward to discovering new talent and giving them this platform.”

The concept flips the usual singing competition on its head. Instead of performing in a studio for judges and a live audience (think The Voice), the contestants will join the headliner on tour, performing as opening acts in venues all over the U.S. To stay on the tour, each artist has to win over local crowds, making it a mix of survival and star-making. “No more shiny floors and studio audiences,” said Sheridan. “This is where the rubber meets the road — literally. Get in the van, go to the next town, and win the crowd. Do it enough, and you become the next leader.”

Produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, David Glasser’s 101 Studios, and Shelton and Metzger’s Lucky Horseshoe Productions, The Road will give viewers “a backstage pass into the gritty and unforgiving life of a touring artist.” Sheridan and Shelton have both found success on TV (Yellowstone for Sheridan, and The Voice for Shelton), but this series promises to show a raw side of the industry rarely seen on traditional shows.

“This project has been a true labor of love that Taylor, Blake, Lee and I have been talking about for some time now,” said Glasser, 53. “I can’t thank CBS enough for supporting us on this journey to bring an incredible project to audiences everywhere.”

Metzger added, “Blake and I have been working together a long time and now joining forces with Taylor and David is literally the kind of team you dream about to bring something of this scale to country music fans.”

As for the headlining superstar who’ll take these up-and-coming artists on tour? According to the press release, CBS is keeping that detail under wraps for now.
