Brain fitness course can reduce risk of dementia




GRINNELL — Poweshiek County Public Health is hosting Unlocking Brain Fitness: Keys to Dementia Prevention.

The program, for interested individuals age 55 and older, Keys is a 10-week course which addresses a modifiable risk factor each week.

Topics will be presented by health and wellness experts including a dietitian, a pharmacist and a fitness professional — all of whom will offer individual, confidential sessions at the end of weekly courses.

Poweshiek County Public Health is offering the program free of charge. Participants can reserve their spots by calling 641-236-2385, option 2.

The class is limited to 15 participants per session.

Classes begin Monday, Sept. 23 from 9-11 a.m. at Community Hope Church, 501 N. Front St. in Montezuma and last for 10 weeks.

The program will address eating well, moving, being social, hearing well, staying sharp, sleeping enough, controlling chronic disease, building stress resilience and using the right medications.
