Brewers 7, Cubs 1: Brice Turang wraps up terrific homestand with yet another grand slam

play

What a way to usher the Chicago Cubs back out of town.

Highlighted by yet another grand slam – their fourth of the homestand and second in eight games by Brice Turang – the Milwaukee Brewers scored all seven of their runs in the fourth inning to chase Kyle Hendricks in a 7-1 victory in front of another sellout crowd at American Family Field on Sunday afternoon.

Christian Yelich also homered off Hendricks to start the inning, which propelled the Brewers to their sixth victory in their last seven games and 50th on the season.

Starter Freddy Peralta tied his season high with seven innings as he and Jakob Junis combined to limit the Cubs to just two hits.

Freddy Peralta wraps up another solid start

A leadoff homer and three first-inning baserunners didn’t appear to bode well for Peralta.

How off-base that ended up being, though, as the right-hander totally shut down the Cubs from there. Peralta issued a third-inning walk but otherwise faced the minimum in his third straight solid start.

BOX SCORE: Brewers 7, Cubs 1

All told, Peralta (6-4) scattered two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over 103 pitches, one fewer than the season high he set in his last outing.

Brice Turang hits yet another grand slam

Hendricks, the perennial Brewer killer, has had an off-season in 2024 but was recently reinstalled in an injury plagued Chicago rotation.

He mostly sailed through his first time through the order but quickly ran into trouble in the fourth. It began when William Contreras legged out an infield squibber then came to a head a batter later when Christian Yelich hammered a hanging curveball 422 feet out to center for a 2-1 Milwaukee lead.

The Brewers weren’t finished, however. Jake Bauers drew a one-out walk, then Rhys Hoskins singled courtesy of an Ian Happ misplay on his towering fly ball to left field. Sal Frelick followed by singling in Bauers, then Jackson Chourio singled to load the bases.

Andruw Monasterio struck out, bringing Brice Turang to the plate. He then blasted Hendricks’s second pitch, a sinker out over the plate, out to right for his second grand slam and the Brewers’ fifth grand slam in their last eight games.

Milwaukee now leads the majors with six grand slams and its seven-run inning set a new season high. With the Brewers holding a 7-1 lead, Hendricks was pulled from the game by a lustily booed Craig Counsell.

Cubs grab another first-inning lead

For the second straight game the Cubs hit a first-inning homer on the second pitch of the game, this one to left by Nico Hoerner. Peralta needed 23 pitches in total to navigate the frame, but he did so without allowing any more runs.
