BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WBOY) — Thursday marked the 15th annual World’s Largest Swim Lesson, where pools and aquatic centers from around the world offer simultaneous free swim lessons to teach kids water safety.

In Bridgeport, the lesson was held at the Bridge Sports Complex where lifeguards joined others from around the world to teach swimming techniques and swim lessons that could help save a life.

The World’s Largest Swim Lesson is part of a global drowning prevention event launched by the World Waterpark Association in 2010. Officials at the Bridge said that it’s important to discuss, teach and learn the importance of water safety.

“So, the best advice I can give is to just like start as early as possible even if your children are older, it’s okay. Or if you’re an adult and don’t know how to swim, we offer adult lessons as well. It’s just important for everyone,” Bridge Aquatics Manager Breanna Kniceley said.

The Bridge Sports Complex offers swimming lessons year-round, and officials at the complex said if anyone wants any updates or how to register for lessons anyone can text “SWIM LESSONS” to 833-262-7722 to receive updates on swim lesson registrations.

“We have two pools here. The warm pool is great especially if you’re just starting out for your children and it’s a little warmer and you can touch all the way across,” Kniceley said. “We have membership pricing if you cannot get into swim lessons. I know sometimes they’re difficult. Just come here with your children, we offer day passes and memberships.”

Team World’s Largest Swim Lesson holds five Guinness World Records for the largest concurrent swimming lesson conducted at multiple venues including the current official record which was set in 2014 with more than 36,000 participants in 22 countries.
