On July 30, 2024, Brownell Travel, Inc. (“Brownell”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of California after discovering that an unknown actor gained access to certain Brownell systems. In this notice, Brownell explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information. Upon completing its investigation, Brownell began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What Caused the Brownell Travel Data Breach?

The Brownell Travel data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Brownell’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, last year, Brownell Travel detected unusual activity within its computer network. In response, Brownell secured its systems, restored access, and then launched an investigation into the incident to learn more about what happened and what, if any, consumer information may have been compromised.

Through this investigation, Brownell learned that an unauthorized party was able to access portions of its IT network between November 10, 2023 and November 26, 2023. The investigation also confirmed that the unauthorized party was able to access or download confidential consumer information stored on Brownell’s systems.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Brownell Travel reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.

On July 30, 2024, Brownell Travel sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. Unfortunately, the publicly available data breach letter on the California Attorney General’s website does not indicate what data types were leaked; however, the personalized letters that went out last week should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
